Rivas filled in occasionally this season when the Padres needed an extra catcher. His .221/.303/.338 slash line in 24 games was adequate enough for a depth option behind the plate but wasn't good enough that the Padres felt they had to keep him on the 40-man roster.

With a thumb strain ending Austin Nola's season, Rivas will rejoin the big-league roster to lend a hand with the catching duties during the closing stretch of the season.
