Top Webster Rivas News

  • Padres' Webster Rivas: Outrighted off roster

Rivas cleared waivers Friday and was outrighted to Triple-A El Paso.

Rivas filled in occasionally this season when the Padres needed an extra catcher. His .221/.303/.338 slash line in 24 games was adequate enough for a depth option behind the plate but wasn't good enough that the Padres felt they had to keep him on the 40-man roster.

  • Padres' Webster Rivas: Recalled Friday

Rivas was recalled from Triple-A El Paso on Friday.

With a thumb strain ending Austin Nola's season, Rivas will rejoin the big-league roster to lend a hand with the catching duties during the closing stretch of the season. Rivas played in 21 games for the Padres earlier this season, hitting .220/.303/.356 with two homers and four RBI across 67 plate appearances.

  • Padres' Webster Rivas: Sent down Thursday

Rivas was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Thursday.

Rivas had served in a depth role behind the dish recently, and he hit .222 with a homer, four runs, three RBI and eight strikeouts in 10 games since July 1. He'll now head back to the minors after Austin Nola (knee) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list in a corresponding move.

  • Padres' Webster Rivas: Swats second home run

Rivas went 1-for-5 with a three-run home run and a strikeout in Sunday's 11-1 win over the Phillies.

Rivas has had limited playing time behind Victor Caratini recently, but he hit his first home run since May 30 to extend the Padres' lead in Sunday's blowout victory. The 29-year-old has hit .205 with two home runs, four RBI and three runs across 14 appearances this year, and he should continue to serve as the backup catcher until Austin Nola (knee) is cleared to return.

  • Padres' Webster Rivas: Laces two doubles

Rivas went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a run in Saturday's 10-1 loss to Arizona.

Rivas singled in the fifth and doubled in the seventh and ninth innings, scoring San Diego's lone run after the latter. It was a welcome breakout performance for Rivas, who was 0-for-11 in his prior five games and is now 7-for-32 this season.

  • Padres' Webster Rivas: Hits first major-league homer

Rivas went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's 7-4 loss to Houston.

The 30-year-old catcher accounted for San Diego's only run off Zack Greinke on Sunday, a fifth-inning solo shot. That was Rivas' first major-league hit, and he added a two-out single in the ninth. Rivas figures to serve as the backup catcher to Victor Caratini while Austin Nola (knee) is out.

  • Padres' Webster Rivas: Called up by Padres

Rivas' contract was selected by the Padres on Friday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Rivas has been in the minors for 11 seasons, but he'll make his major-league debut behind the plate Friday, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. Austin Nola (knee) was placed on the injured list as part of a corresponding move. Rivas should mainly serve as a depth option at catcher behind Victor Caratini while Nola is sidelined.
