The Red Sox signed Westbrook to a minor-league contract Monday with an invitation to major-league spring training.
Westbrook is 28 years old and has yet to appear in a big-league game, but he posted an impressive .294/.400/.496 slash line with 21 home runs over 496 plate appearances last season with the Triple-A affiliate of the Yankees. He'll function as organizational infield depth for Boston leading into the 2024 campaign.

Westbrook didn't play in 2020 after the minor-league season was cancelled, but the 25-year-old will attempt to revive his baseball career in 2021 with a new organization. Before attending spring training in 2020 with the Giants and being released in the summer, Westbrook had played exclusively in Arizona's organization. He split time between Triple-A Reno and Double-A Jackson in 2019, slashing .281/.358/.451 across 448 at-bats.

The toolsy Westbrook has not been overwhelmed at this level despite his young age. He has been particularly hot lately, batting a scalding .474 with two home runs and 10 RBI over his last 10 games. He's small and has questionable defensive skills, but should still be on the prospect radar right now.
