  • Twins' Dalton Kelly: Inks MiLB deal with Minnesota

Kelly signed a minor-league contract Friday with the Twins.

The 28-year-old spent the entire 2022 season with Oakland's Triple-A affiliate and slashed .219/.328/.416 with 15 home runs over 98 games in the Pacific Coast League. Kelly will function as organizational depth at first base and in the corner outfield for Minnesota.

  • Athletics' Dalton Kelly: Fails to earn roster spot

Kelly was reassigned to Triple-A Las Vegas on Monday, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Kelly was in camp as a non-roster invitee and was attempting to win a starting role at first base. His .179/.324/.179 spring slash line didn't help his case, so he'll return to the minors to wait for his next chance.

  • Athletics' Dalton Kelly: Swipes two bases Tuesday

Kelly went 1-for-3 with an RBI single, a walk and two stolen bases in a Cactus League loss to the Dodgers on Tuesday.

While he's still hitting just .130 this spring, Kelly demonstrated he could be a disruptive presence with his work at the plate and on the basepaths in the loss. The 27-year-old flashed some unprecedented power at Triple-A Durham in the Rays organization last season and has a pair of 20-steal campaigns to his name in the minors, but his lack of experience at the big-league level may still make him the underdog in a three-man battle for the first base job that also includes Billy McKinney and Eric Thames.

  • Athletics' Dalton Kelly: Competing for first base job

Kelly, who's in camp on a minor-league contract, is a candidate for the Athletics' vacant first base job, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Kelly is competing with fellow non-roster invitees Billy McKinney and Eric Thames, and he hasn't gotten off to much of a start at the plate by going 1-for-6 over his first four exhibitions. However, the 27-year-old does have some recent success to point to, albeit at the minor-league level, as he slugged 27 home runs with Triple-A Durham last season while with the Rays organization. Kelly has never seen regular-season big-league action, but he's hit .283 or better at four different professional stops and has made 357 appearances at first base over the last four seasons in the minors.

  • Athletics' Dalton Kelly: Links up with A's

Kelly signed a minor-league contract with the Athletics on Dec. 3.

Kelly will move on to the third organization of his career after he was drafted by the Mariners in 2015 before being dealt to Tampa Bay the following year. The slugging first baseman spent the entire 2021 campaign at Triple-A Durham, slashing .244/.350/.512 with 27 home runs and 17 stolen bases in 20 attempts. The 27-year-old's intriguing blend of power, speed and on-base skills could make him someone to keep an eye on if he reaches the majors in 2022, but he'll still face an uphill battle to contribute for Oakland so long as Matt Olson remains on the roster.
