Stephens cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Columbus on Tuesday.
The 26-year-old has yet to make his big-league debut. He's struggled to a 7.09 ERA in the Indians' and White Sox' minor-league systems this season.

Indians' Jordan Stephens: Claimed, optioned by Cleveland
Stephens was claimed off waivers by Cleveland on Saturday and optioned to Double-A Akron.
Stephens has thrown 37.2 innings for Triple-A Charlotte this season, struggling to an ugly 8.60 ERA. The 26-year-old will drop down a level to sort things out, and he doesn't appear to be close to making an impact at the highest level.

White Sox's Jordan Stephens: Back from hand injury
Stephens (hand) was activated from Triple-A Charlotte's 7-day injured list June 1 and has made two relief appearances since being reinstated to the roster.
The right-hander has covered four innings between the two outings, giving up two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out six. Stephens had been sidelined for nearly a month with the fractured left hand and likely would have faced an even lengthier absence if the injury had been to his throwing hand.

White Sox's Jordan Stephens: Recovering from fractured hand
Triple-A Charlotte placed Stephens on its 7-day injured list May 10 with a fractured left (non-throwing) hand, James Fegan of The Athletic reports.
Stephens was added to the 40-man roster over the winter with the expectation that he would eventually make his way to the big leagues as a potential depth starter, but the hand injury will delay any potential promotion. Even before breaking his hand, the 26-year-old was enduring a tough season in the International League. Over his six starts spanning 31.1 innings, Stephens had posted a 9.48 ERA and 1.93 WHIP while striking out 23.

He is close to big-league ready, but has a very low ceiling and is more of an organizational depth arm or middle reliever long term.

White Sox's Jordan Stephens: Shielded from Rule 5 draft
Stephens had his contract purchased from Triple-A Charlotte on Tuesday.
Stephens reached Triple-A last season after posting a 2.95 ERA with 40 strikeouts over 39 innings with Double-A Birmingham. The White Sox have elected to protect him from the Rule 5 draft by adding him to the 40-man roster.

White Sox's Jordan Stephens: Promoted to Triple-A
Stephens was promoted from Double-A Birmingham to Triple-A Charlotte on Sunday, James Fegan of The Athletic Chicago reports.
The 25-year-old received the call to the International League after posting a 2.95 ERA and 40:12 K:BB across 39.2 innings through seven starts with Birmingham. Stephens had been particularly good over his past four outings at Double-A, with the righty crediting the removal of a cutter from his arsenal against lefties for his improved performance during that stretch, according to Fegan. If Stephens is able to remain productive over several starts at Triple-A, he could earn a look later this season in the big-league rotation, which has been a sore spot for the White Sox.

White Sox's Jordan Stephens: Hot start after missing first two months
Stephens has 37 strikeouts in eight starts (47.1 innings) with an ERA of 1.33 with Double-A Birmingham this season.
Stephens got a late start to the season, being held out until June 3 with tendinitis in his right elbow, Josh Norris of Baseball America reports. While the strikeout numbers are pretty low, Stephens has shown his ability to control his pitches as he's holding hitters to a .228 average and is only walking 6.4 percent of batters.
