  • Pirates' Kyle Nicolas: Recalled by Pittsburgh

The Pirates recalled Nicolas from Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports.

Nicolas ended the 2023 season as part of the Pirates' bullpen. He struggled in his four outings, giving up seven runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out seven over 5.1 frames. Nicolas has looked better in Triple-A this season, posting a 0.84 ERA and 2.06 WHIP over 10.2 innings, and he'll get another shot in the majors. The move corresponds with Ryder Ryan being optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis on Thursday.

  • Pirates' Kyle Nicolas: Optioned to minor-league camp

The Pirates optioned Nicolas to Triple-A Indianapolis on Sunday.

Nicolas finished last season in the big-league bullpen but is now on the outside looking in for the Opening Day roster. The 25-year-old had a 6.20 ERA over 45 innings at Indianapolis last season, and he'll likely need better results in 2024 to make it back to the majors.

He showed much better following a move to the Indianapolis bullpen in early August, delivering a 2.05 ERA with 31 strikeouts across his last 22 frames. Thomas Hatch was optioned out in a corresponding 28-man roster move.

  • Pirates' Kyle Nicolas: Reassigned to minor-league camp

Nicolas was reassigned Tuesday to the minor-league side of Pirates camp.

No surprise here given that Nicolas spent all of 2022 at Double-A Altoona. The 24-year-old right-hander had thrown three scoreless innings so far in Grapefruit League play and could make the jump to Triple-A Indianapolis to kick off the 2023 campaign.

  • Pirates' Kyle Nicolas: Rejoins Double-A rotation

Nicolas (shoulder) was activated from Double-A Altoona's 7-day injured list Saturday and struck out two over 2.2 innings while giving up two runs on three hits and a walk in his return to the mound.

Nicolas was cleared to make his return to Altoona's active roster as a long reliever after a three-week stint on the shelf with a shoulder injury. The 23-year-old right-hander should slot back into the rotation next week and will take a 4.15 ERA and 1.28 WHIP into his 12th outing of the season with Altoona.

  • Pirates' Kyle Nicolas: Placed on injured list

Nicolas was placed on the 7-day injured list at Double-A Altoona with a shoulder injury Saturday, Mike Persak of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Nicolas started in Altoona on Friday and allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out six in 4.1 innings to take the loss. However, he's dealing with a shoulder injury that will force him to miss at least a week. The right-hander had been effective to begin the season, posting a 3.98 ERA, 54:16 K:BB and 1.27 WHIP in 40.2 innings over 10 starts at the Double-A level. However, it's not yet clear how long Nicolas is expected to be sidelined.

  • Pirates' Kyle Nicolas: Strong debut for Altoona

Nicolas allowed two hits and three walks while striking out five over 3.2 innings in his debut for Double-A Altoona.

According to Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com, the Pirates were raving about Nicolas this spring and scouts in other organizations think the Pirates did really well to land him from Miami in the Jacob Stallings trade. Nicolas has logged 43 innings at Double-A dating back to last season, so he could earn a midseason bump to Triple-A Indianapolis.
