Red Sox's Braiden Ward: Candidate for wild-card roster

Ward has joined the Red Sox in New York and could be part of their American League Wild Card Series roster versus the Yankees, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.
The outfielder has yet to play in the majors and would need to be added to the 40-man roster. If Ward is included on Boston's wild-card roster it would be in a pinch runner/defensive replacement. The 27-year-old stole 61 bases this season with Triple-A Worcester while sporting a .251/.364/.373 batting line.

Ward has recorded 17 stolen bases across 16 Grapefruit League games with the Red Sox in spring training.
Per Conor Liguori of The Sporting News, Ward now holds the record for the most stolen bases in spring training. Ward's running ability comes as no surprise, given that he logged 56 steals (on 64 attempts) across 96 games between Double-A and Triple-A last season. He was acquired by the Red Sox from the Rockies in November and has yet to appear in an official major-league game. However, his ability to play multiple positions in both the outfield and infield, coupled with his proficiency on the bases, could earn Ward a call-up from the Red Sox in 2026.

Colorado traded Ward to Boston on Tuesday in exchange for left-handed reliever Brennan Bernardino, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.
Ward is a 26-year-old speedster who stole 57 bases in 64 attempts across Double-A and Triple-A last season. He also batted a healthy .290 over 97 games, but he has very little power, as he went deep just twice in the minors in 2025. Ward has played all three outfield positions as well as second base and third base in the minors, so if he makes it to the majors, he best profiles as a utility player and speed specialist.
