  • White Sox's Juan Carela: Back with ChiSox on minors deal

The White Sox re-signed Carela (elbow) to a minor-league contract April 19.

Carela was released by the White Sox earlier this month but is back in the organization on a minor-league deal as he continues his recovery from Tommy John surgery. He's not expected to be ready to pitch in games until around midseason of 2026.

  • Juan Carela: Cut loose by Chicago

The White Sox released Carela (elbow) on Thursday.

Carela has made just seven career starts above the High-A level, but the White Sox recognized enough potential in the 23-year-old right-hander to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft this winter and add him to the 40-man roster. Unfortunately for Carela, he suffered an elbow injury in spring training and required Tommy John surgery, which will likely keep him out of action until around the middle of the 2026 season. Given his lengthy recovery timeline, the White Sox seemingly deemed Carela an expendable piece and released him to open up a spot on the 40-man roster for catcher Omar Narvaez, whose contract was selected from Double-A Birmingham in a corresponding move.

  • White Sox's Juan Carela: Optioned to Double-A

The White Sox optioned Carela to Double-A Birmingham on Friday.

Carela made just one Cactus League appearance, tossing a scoreless inning. The 23-year-old was added to the 40-man roster over the offseason after reaching Double-A for the first time in 2024.

  • White Sox's Juan Carela: Heading for Tommy John surgery

The White Sox announced Friday that Carela will undergo Tommy John surgery on his right elbow, James Fegan of SoxMachine.com reports.

The 23-year-old was added to the 40-man roster in November in order to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft, but he'll miss the entirety of 2025 due to the surgery. Carela is likely to be sidelined until midseason 2026.

  • White Sox's Juan Carela: Added to 40-man roster

The White Sox selected Carela's contract from Double-A Birmingham on Tuesday, James Fegan of SoxMachine.com reports.

Acquired from the Yankees in 2023 in the Keynan Middleton trade, Carela posted a 3.71 ERA and 114:45 K:BB across 106.2 innings covering 23 starts between High-A Winston-Salem and Birmingham in 2024. Just seven of those outings came at the latter affiliate, and he could return to that level to start 2025.

  • White Sox's Juan Carela: Dealt to White Sox

The White Sox acquired Carela from the Yankees on Tuesday in exchange for right-hander Keynan Middleton.

A 21-year-old righty, Carela logged a 3.67 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 109 strikeouts in 83.1 innings at High-A Hudson Valley this season. He's a decent enough pitching prospect and will work on continuing to improve his command and control in the coming years to make it as a starter long term.
