  • Astros' Luis Baez: Yet to make 2025 debut

Baez, who opened the year on the development list, was assigned to Double-A Corpus Christi on April 15 but has not yet played in a game.

Baez was a pretty big disappointment at High-A in 2024, logging a .300 OBP and 0.20 BB/K as a 20-year-old playing half his games in the hitter-friendly park in Asheville. His body and athleticism has also trended in the wrong direction, so he's a power-only corner outfield prospect who doesn't project to get on base enough to play everyday at the highest level. He may still be working with the coaching staff at Double-A or dealing with an undisclosed injury, given that he hasn't played in a game despite being assigned 10 days ago.

  • Astros' Luis Baez: Ready for spring training

Baez (thumb) went 0-for-1 with a walk during Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Nationals.

Baez has been cleared for game action after undergoing left thumb surgery in September. He's unlikely to crack the major-league roster to open the 2025 campaign but could see a few more at-bats against big-league arms until presumably being assigned to minor-league spring training.

  • Astros' Luis Baez: Undergoes surgery

Baez underwent surgery on his left thumb Wednesday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Baez has been held out of action at Double-A Corpus Christi since the end of August due to his injured thumb, and the procedure will officially put an early end to his second year of professional baseball. The 20-year-old outfield prospect slashed .258/.301/.462 with 21 homers and 76 RBI across 468 plate appearances between High-A and Double-A, and he's expected to be ready to go for the start of next season.

  • Astros' Luis Baez: Enjoying cozy home park

Baez is slashing .291/.335/.473 with nine home runs and a 25 percent strikeout rate for High-A Asheville.

Baez has a high ceiling as a power hitter, but it's worth noting he is slashing .232/.291/.326 away from the extreme hitter's park in Asheville (.952 home OPS). At 20 years old, he is younger than many High-A prospects, but not so young that he shouldn't be excelling at this level, especially given his favorable home conditions. He is probably a couple years away from reaching the majors.

  • Astros' Luis Baez: Climbing quickly through minors

Baez is slashing .296/.426/.592 with seven home runs and a 20:22 K:BB in 27 games between the Florida Complex League and Carolina League

The 19-year-old right fielder also had a strong showing last year in the Dominican Summer League with a .305/.351/.552 slash line, and this year he has shown an improved eye at the plate. Baez was old for his class when he signed just after his 18th birthday on Jan. 15, 2022, which is why his exploits in the DSL didn't stand out, but the fact he has quickly ascended to Single-A is a big mark in his favor. He has a chance to develop into a middle-of-the-order run producer and could continue to earn rapid promotions if his keen eye holds against more advanced pitching.
