Javonte Smart: Let go by Miami
Smart was waived by the Heat on Saturday, Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald reports.
Smart spent a good portion of the 2021-22 season in the G League and was unable to stand out during Summer League, so he'll now look to play elsewhere after Miami released him from his two-way contract. Smart played 44 minutes back in December, but he had barely seen the court since then. Smart tallied 30 points (10-18 FG, 7-12 3Pt, 1-1 FT), nine rebounds, five assists and two steals during Tuesday's win over Birmingham.
Smart was one of two Skyforce starters (Mychal Mulder) to reach the 30-point mark, as the guard erupted for his first 30-point outing since Feb. 15. Heat's Javonte Smart: Nabs two-way deal from Miami
Smart agreed Tuesday with the Heat on a two-way contract, Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald reports.
Smart joins Kyle Guy as the second two-way player on the Heat roster, after Miami upgraded Caleb Martin (Achilles) to a standard NBA deal Tuesday. The undrafted rookie out of LSU previously joined the Heat out of training camp, but he made his NBA debut with the Bucks earlier in the season, appearing in 13 games at the NBA level and averaging 2.4 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 12.3 minutes per contest. After Milwaukee cut Smart from his two-way deal in January, Smart rejoined the Heat's G League affiliate in Sioux Falls. Before agreeing to his two-way contract with Miami, Smart submitted another big outing for Sioux Falls on Tuesday, erupting for a career-high 40 points (11-18 FG, 8-13 3Pt, 6-6 FT) to go with six assists, four rebounds, one steal and one block across 33 minutes in a 130-119 win over the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.... Smart, an undrafted rookie out of LSU, previously attended training camp with the Heat before he was ultimately cut in October and assigned to the organization's G League affiliate. The 22-year-old combo guard had been one of the early season standouts in the G League, averaging 22.0 points (on 49.4 percent shooting from the field), 4.4 rebounds, 3.8 three-pointers, 3.6 assists and 1.0 steals in 35.3 minutes per game over five appearances with the Sioux Falls Skyforce.
