Looney has spent the last two seasons with the Packers, both on the active roster and the practice squad. He made the shift from defensive lineman to tight end in December, but that left a tough battle for a roster spot. With this move coming nearly a month before the season opener, Looney has plenty of time to find a new squad.

The Packers drafted Looney as a defensive lineman in the seventh round of the 2018 NFL Draft, but the California product appears to be finding recent success as a tight end. His official position designation has changed on Green Bay's practice-squad roster. It's encouraging to see the second-year pro showing versatility, and he could be a candidate to bump to the 53-man roster later in the season if a special-teams role opens up.

James Looney: Drops from 53-man roster
The Packers waived Looney on Saturday, Ryan Wood of the Green Bay Press-Gazette reports.
A seventh-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, Looney suited up for just three games last season and didn't make a tackle. The Packers were encouraged by the play of Fadol Brown and rookie Kingsley Keke in training camp, so Looney's depth isn't necessary on the 53-man roster. He is a strong candidate for the practice squad.
