  • Browns' Kareem Hunt: Not suiting up Friday

Hunt isn't slated to play in Friday's preseason game in Jacksonville.

Hunt recently held himself out of team drills in training camp due to his desire for a new contract, but he eventually returned to full capacity at practice after two days. Still, he won't be available to the Browns offense, along with top running back Nick Chubb. With those two unavailable, D'Ernest Johnson, Demetric Felton, Jerome Ford and John Kelly will be the team's active members of the backfield Friday.

  • Browns' Kareem Hunt: Participating in team drills Sunday

Hunt returned to team drills Sunday after voluntarily sitting out the last two days while disgruntled with his current contract, Jake Trotter of ESPN.com reports.

Hunt held himself out of team drills during Friday and Saturday's sessions in protest while asking for a long-term extension, and James Palmer of NFL Network reported earlier Sunday that Hunt had requested a trade, which the team denied. However, despite the weekend drama, it appears the talented running back is back in the mix and will continue to participate fully in practices throughout training camp. Hunt appeared in only eight games during the 2021 campaign due to a litany of injuries, but he accounted for 1,145 yards from scrimmage and 11 touchdowns in 2020.

  • Browns' Kareem Hunt: Wants new contract

Hunt has not participated in team drills over the last two days as he looks for a contract extension, Josina Anderson of CBS Sports reports.

The pseudo-holdout is a bit strange considering Hunt is still participating in individual workouts. The veteran tailback is on the final year of a two-year, $13.25 million extension signed back in 2020. Hunt played in just eight games during the 2021 season due to a litany of injuries, but he was a multi-talented force back in 2020,, accounting for over 1,100 yards from scrimmage along with 11 touchdowns. Given the Browns just dished out an expensive extension to star running back Nick Chubb last year, it remains to be seen what type of budget remains for Hunt, which could mean this situation persists into the dog days of training camp.

  • Browns' Kareem Hunt: Feels healthy heading into 2022

Hunt said Wednesday that he feels "100 percent" healthy heading into Cleveland's training camp, which begins July 27, Scott Petrak of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports.

Hunt battled multiple injuries that limited him to just eight games in 2021, including a torn calf and an ankle issue. The No. 2 running back still managed to accumulate 560 yards on 100 total touches in a crowded position group consisting of Nick Chubb, D'Ernest Johnson and Demetric Felton. Hunt is heading into the final season of his current contract with the Browns, and he hopes to sign an extension with the team before the start of this coming season, according to Petrak. The 26-year-old has been a very effective complementary back during his three-year tenure with the Browns, but the team's difficult cap situation moving forward may complicate any extension talks this offseason.
