Browns' Chase McLaughlin: Misses FGA in one-score loss
McLaughlin was successful on one of two field-goal attempts and made his lone extra-point kick in Sunday's 16-10 loss to the Ravens.
McLaughlin failed to convert a 46-yard attempt on Cleveland's opening drive, his third missed kick over the last two games. When asked about the kicker by reporters this week, special-teams coach Mike Priefer said he was confident in McLaughlin, whose previous misses were not a factor in games. That changed Sunday. McLaughlin's now under 80 percent on field goals -- 14 of 18 -- and more questions could arise. When the Browns' sputtering offense gets in range, it's vital they come away with points. The team is on a bye Week 13, which gives them plenty of time to evaluate McLaughlin and seek alternatives.... See More ... See Less
Browns' Chase McLaughlin: Retains coach's confidence
Cleveland special teams coach Mike Priefer said he remains confident in McLaughlin despite recent misses, Scott Petrak of The Chronicle-Telegram reports.
McLaughlin's been accurate all season and none of his misses have been the reason for a loss, so it would be a surprise if the Browns moved on from him. He missed a field-goal attempt and had an extra-point kick blocked last week against the Lions, which Priefer told Petrak was the result of a low kick, not the protection. McLaughlin's made 13 of 16 field-goal attempts (81.2 percent) and 25 of 26 extra-point kicks (96.2 percent) in 2021.... See More ... See Less
Browns' Chase McLaughlin: Misses among few opportunities
McLaughlin missed his lone field-goal attempt and made one of two extra-point kicks in Sunday's 13-10 win over Detroit.
In another game that's become increasingly normal for McLaughlin, the kicker did not have a lot of opportunities to put points on the board. That means every attempt is vital. He missed wide right on a 46-yard field-goal attempt, and the missed extra point was blocked. It was not ideal weather conditions for an offense, but Cleveland's scored 17 points or fewer in five of the past six games, rendering McLaughlin a lower-tier kicking option for fantasy managers.... Browns' Chase McLaughlin: Has little work in loss
McLaughlin did not attempt a field goal and made his lone extra-point kick in Sunday's 45-7 loss to New England.
The Browns' offense has been maddeningly inconsistent this season, and not much was expected from it Week 10 when Cleveland was missing its top two running backs. McLaughlin has been spot-on when asked to kick, making 13 of 15 field-goal attempts and all 24 extra-point tries, but he ranks 17th in kicker scoring with 63 points and 20th with 15 FGA.... Browns' Chase McLaughlin: Rings up double-digit points
McLaughlin converted two of three field-goal attempts and five extra-point kicks in Sunday's 41-16 win over the Bengals.
McLaughlin's endured very few scoring opportunities the previous three weeks, scoring just 11 points, but he matched that total in Sunday's win. The game was the best Cleveland's offense looked in weeks. McLaughlin, a journeyman placekicker, has performed well for the Browns, nailing 13 of 15 field-goal attempts and all 23 extra-point kicks.... See More ... See Less
Browns' Chase McLaughlin: Produces when called
McLaughlin was successful on one field-goal attempt and one extra-point kick in Sunday's 15-10 loss to the Steelers.
McLaughlin rebounded from his only missed kick of the season -- a blocked FGA last week -- and produced points whenever asked. The downside is that Cleveland's sputtering and inconsistent offense didn't afford him many chances. McLaughlin has scored just 11 points over the last three weeks.... See More ... See Less
Browns' Chase McLaughlin: Misses first kick
McLaughlin converted one of two field-goal attempts and two of two extra-point kicks in Thursday's 17-14 win over Denver.
McLaughlin was good from 52 yards -- he's 4-of-4 this season from 50 and beyond -- but had a 41-yard attempt blocked. While the failed attempt is technically a missed field goal, McLaughlin has been perfect on kicks that are not blocked in 2021. The Browns have suffered a spate of injuries to key skill-position players, which could break either way for a kicker. Last week, McLaughlin had just two points in a blowout loss to the Cardinals; this week, he was in position for an eight-point game, plus whatever bonus fantasy leagues might hand out for field goals from 50 yards and beyond.... Browns' Chase McLaughlin: Remains perfect in low-output game
McLaughlin made two of two extra-point kicks and did not attempt a field goal in Sunday's 37-14 loss to Arizona.
McLaughlin did all that he was asked to do, but Cleveland's defense got rolled by the Cardinals and the offense couldn't keep up as it did last week in a 47-42 loss to the Chargers. When needed, McLaughlin has been a steady boot for the Browns, making all nine field-goal attempts and 15 extra-point kicks. He's currently tied for 14th among placekickers with 42 points through six games.... See More ... See Less
Browns' Chase McLaughlin: Racks up double-digit points
McLaughlin went 2-for-2 on field-goal attempts and made all four of his extra-point kicks in Sunday's 47-42 loss to the Chargers.
McLaughlin was perfect again and has converted all 22 kicks -- nine field goals and 13 extra-points -- through five weeks. This was McLaughlin's second double-digit effort in the last three weeks. A third-year journeyman that's kicked for six teams since entering the NFL in 2019, McLaughlin has earned permanency for the first time.... See More ... See Less
Browns' Chase McLaughlin: Keeps dialing it in long distance
McLaughlin made two of two field-goal attempts and was not asked to kick an extra point in Sunday's 14-7 win over the Vikings.
McLaughlin, who has not missed a kick yet, converted from 48 and 53 yards in the win. It was his third successful attempt from beyond the 50. The Browns lined up for an extra-point kick following their lone touchdown, but a defensive delay-of-game penalty changed their thinking. With the penalty enforced, Cleveland head coach Kevin Stefanski opted to go for a two-pointer from the one-yard line, and the team was successful.... See More ... See Less
Browns' Chase McLaughlin: Cements placekicking job
McLaughlin successfully converted four field-goal attempts and two extra-point kicks for 14 points in Sunday's 26-6 win over the Bears.
McLaughlin's big day included two field goals from beyond a distance of 50 yards -- a 57- and 52- yarder -- and he joined Phil Dawson as the only two kickers in franchise history to make two field goals of 50 yards or more in a single game. The Browns' red-zone offense, which had scored six touchdowns on seven trips the first two weeks of the season, got bogged down by Chicago's defense. Cleveland scored one TD and settled for two field goals among its four trips -- a fourth red-zone appearance was on the final series when the Browns took a knee rather than run up the score. McLaughlin, who won the kicking derby during preseason by default and was assured to be the kicker in the weeks leading up to Week 1, has yet to miss a kick and has cemented his grip on the job for the moment.... Browns' Chase McLaughlin: Perfect with little to do
McLaughlin successfully converted his lone field-goal attempt and all three extra-point kicks in Sunday's 31-21 win over Houston.
Through two weeks, McLaughlin hasn't had much to do. Week 2's field goal came on his first attempt of the season, as the Browns have scored touchdowns on six of seven drives that reached the red zone. McLaughlin's made all of his extra-point tries, and on his kickoffs that have been returned, the opponents' average starting field position has been the 20-yard line.... See More ... See Less
Browns' Chase McLaughlin: Makes minor impact
McLaughlin made three of three extra-point kicks in Sunday's 33-29 loss to the Chiefs.
McLaughlin came out of the preseason as the only rostered kicker, but it wasn't until just before the start of the regular season that the Browns confirmed him as their placekicker. That left his status murky entering fantasy drafts, but he did nothing to lose the job Sunday. The Browns scored touchdowns on all four trips to the red zone, and head coach Kevin Stefanski opted for a two-point conversion following an encroachment penalty on what was supposed to be a kick. Three of his five kickoffs were touchbacks, and the two kicks that were returned left the Chiefs with an average field position of the 19.5-yard line.... See More ... See Less
Browns' Chase McLaughlin: Active Sunday
McLaughlin (hamstring) is active for Sunday's season opener against Kansas City.
Though McLaughlin was a full participant in practice Friday, he was listed as questionable for Sunday's game. However, he's good to go after all, while fellow kicker Chris Naggar has been made inactive by the Browns.... See More ... See Less
Browns' Chase McLaughlin: Added to injury report Friday
Though McLaughlin was a full participant in practice Friday, he's listed as questionable for Sunday's season opener against the Chiefs with a hamstring injury, Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
We'll monitor McLaughlin's status leading up to Sunday's 4:25 p.m. ET kickoff, but he's currently the only kicker on Cleveland's active roster. If his Week 1 status indeed is in any danger, the Browns have the option of elevating Chris Naggar from their practice squad.... See More ... See Less
Browns' Chase McLaughlin: Will kick Week 1
Cleveland head coach Kevin Stefanski said McLaughlin will be the team's placekicker Week 1 against the Chiefs, Andrew Gribble of the Browns' official site reports.
McLaughlin outkicked Cody Parkey in training camp but was not declared the de facto kicker until Monday. The Browns added Chris Naggar to the practice squad last week, but it will not affect McLaughlin's status at this time. He made all of his preseason kicks before missing on a 56-yard field-goal attempt then later an extra-point kick in the third preseason game.... See More ... See Less
