The writing was pretty much on the wall for Morris after he only saw four special teams snaps during the Jets' preseason finale. His usage throughout preseason saw a steady decline, rendering this decision unsurprising.

Morris has witnessed a decline in usage during the preseason, which hints that his time in New York may be coming to an end. Morris has been supplanted by rookie Elijah McGuire, and unless he's able to acquire a bigger special teams role before the regular season, he may become expendable rather quickly.

Jets' Romar Morris: Set to play Saturday
Morris (shoulder) is expected to play in Saturday's preseason opener against the Titans.
Last summer with the Jets, Morris carried 11 times for 27 yards (2.5 YPC) before getting cut prior to the third preseason game. He'll have his opportunities again this time around but will need to be much more effective in order to secure a roster spot ahead of Week 1.

Morris was competing for a spot in the crowded Jets backfield prior to being released. He injured his shoulder and will require surgery, which was the reason for the team deciding to part ways. He'll be eligible for the injured reserve list if he clears waivers.
