Avalanche's Valeri Nichushkin: Inks eight-year extension
Nichushkin signed an eight-year, $6.125 million AAV extension with Colorado on Monday, Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic reports.
Nichushkin broke out last season, posting new career highs in goals (25), points (52), average ice time (19:02), hits (89) and shots (180). Nichushkin's previous career high was 34 points during his 2013-14 rookie campaign. The 27-year-old winger benefited from skating in the Avalanche's lethal top six and should be a mainstay there for at least the next several seasons. Nichushkin (undisclosed) will play in Sunday's Game 6 versus the Lightning, Jesse Montano of DNVR Sports reports.
Nichushkin was seen going for X-rays after Game 5 on Friday, but it appears he's avoided injury. Head coach Jared Bednar described the situation as bumps and bruises. Nichushkin scored a goal on five shots and added an assist in Friday's 3-2 loss to the Lightning in Game 5, but the winger was seen going for X-rays after the contest, Mike Chambers of The Denver Post reports.
Whatever injury Nichushkin may have suffered had to have been late in the game, as he logged 20:38 of ice time and wasn't seen leaving the bench. The winger is up to nine goals and 15 points in 19 playoff outings, including multiple points in four of his last seven games, so his absence would be a big one if he's forced to miss time.
