McKenzie was waived by the Blues on Monday, Jeremy Rutherford of The Athletic reports.
McKenzie is expected to clear waivers, and he could be retained on the taxi squad until the AHL season commences in February. The 29-year-old has played in just seven NHL games since the 2016-17 season, but he's enjoyed success in the minors in that stretch.

While it's not entirely clear if this is injury-related, McKenzie looks like he will miss his fourth straight in as many games this preseason. Vegas has a very deep group of young players, so his absence could be related to this reality.

Even if he does land a spot on the roster, the British Columbia native could find himself watching from the press box more often than not.

The B.C. native was waived after training camp but stayed with the Stars organization upon clearing. While it's not uncommon for lower-tiered players to get waived for the sake of the team staying roster compliant, we're guessing coach Ken Hitchcock is happy to still have McKenzie at his disposal since Tyler Pitlick (undisclosed), Radek Faska (lower body) and Brett Ritchie (upper body) are all currently ailing.

McKenzie missed the final five games of the 2016-17 season after taking a stick to the eye. Considering the Stars had already been eliminated from playoff contention, it didn't come as a surprise they opted to shut him down for the year. Back to 100 percent, the winger will no doubt be looking to make a bigger impact after appearing in just 53 outings last year.

There are only three games left for the Stars this campaign, so it's not like the winger has a whole lot of time to heal and still be able to make an impact. If McKenzie doesn't return, he'll finish with 16 points (six goals, 10 assists) and 103 hits over a career-high 53 games.

McKenzie (eye) will fly back to Dallas on Friday to be evaluated and will not have any activity for the next five days.
Considering there are just five games left on the schedule for the Stars and McKenzie is already guaranteed to miss two of them, there's a distinct possibility that the 26-year-old could be done for the season depending on how he responds to treatment. Even if that ends up being the case though, the loss of McKenzie isn't likely to affect most fantasy owners since he's an inconsistent offensive contributor.
