  • Sergey Tolchinsky: Inks tryout deal with Russian club

Tolchinsky signed a tryout contract with CSKA Moscow on Thursday.

The left winger will return home having drawn into a mere four NHL contests since the Hurricanes acquired him as a free agent in August of 2013. However, Tolchinsky fared well offensively with AHL Charlotte, tacking on 85 points (28 goals, 57 assists) over 175 contests. It's rare -- but not unheard of -- for a prospect to ultimately return to North America after heading back to the foreign ranks for a couple of years.

Tolchinsky latched on with the Hurricanes organization as an undrafted free agent in the 2013-14 campaign. The 21-year-old Russian is small at 5-foot-8 and 170 pounds, but he's known as a crafty bugger with a quick release. Tolchinsky was sent back down to the minors Friday.

The diminutive Russian with great hands delivered an assist in Thursday night's win over the Rangers, his NHL debut. Here's a guy who tore through the junior ranks with two consecutive 90-plus point campaigns with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds of the OHL between 2013-15. He'll be someone to watch in training camp ahead of next season.

  • Hurricanes' Sergey Tolchinsky: Notches helper in NHL debut

Tolchinsky got his first career point out of the way in a hurry Thursday, grabbing a second-period assist in his NHL debut against the Rangers.

All the 21-year-old Russian had to do was drop the puck off to Justin Faulk, who did the heavy lifting by firing it home from long distance. Tolchinsky is one of the smallest players in the NHL, but after a couple 90-point campaigns in the OHL, he didn't look out of place in his professional debut this season, putting up 32 points in 65 games for AHL Charlotte. His puck skills are impressive, so it wouldn't be surprising to see Tolchinsky round into a solid contributor over the next couple years if he can learn to be elusive as a little guy in a league full of bruisers.
