Fritz is headed for waivers Monday in order to move him down to the minors, Arthur Staple of The Athletic reports.
Fritz was a long shot for the Opening Night roster and now will be officially moved down to AHL Bridgeport to start the 2019-20 campaign. The winger appeared in a mere eight games for the Islanders last year, in which he recorded one assist, six shots and a minus-3 rating while averaging a mere 10:49 of ice time. If he does earn a call-up this season, Fritz is unlikely to earn a significant uptick in minutes.

Fritz is a long shot to make the 23-man roster, but another 35-plus point campaign in the minors should put him atop the lists of potential call-ups later in the year. Fritz had a pretty good shot to make the team as the third-line center until Derrick Brassard was added to the roster in late August. The 28-year-old has only notched three goals in 42 games over the last two seasons with the Islanders, but he'll likely be one of the first call-ups for the team when injuries arise.

Fritz played in just eight NHL games this year, in which he tallied one helper, six shots and 18 hits while averaging 10:49 of ice time. The center spent most of the year in the minors with AHL Bridgeport. In 57 minor-league contests, he garnered 12 goals and 25 helpers before a hand injury ended his season prematurely. If Fritz can put together a strong showing in camp, he could earn himself a bottom-six role for Opening Night in October.
