Top Zach Werenski News

  • Blue Jackets' Zach Werenski: Three-helper night Thursday

Werenski dished out three assists -- one on the power play -- in Thursday's 5-3 win over the Rangers.

Werenski hadn't posted multiple points in a game since Nov. 20 and had just one helper in his last six games, but he broke out of his slump in a big way, providing a point in each period. Despite his recent lack of flashy performances prior to this one, the offensive-minded blueliner's on pace to reach the 50-point mark for the first time with 25 through 39 games.

Werenski cleared COVID-19 protocols Saturday and will play versus the Devils, Mark Scheig of The Hockey Writers reports.

  • Blue Jackets' Zach Werenski: Officially lands in protocols

Werenski (COVID-19) was officially designated for the league's protocols Tuesday.

With Werenski entering the NHL protocol, he'll for sure miss out against the Lightning on Tuesday, though it could certainly be longer. The blueliner has three points in his previous four contests while averaging 27:19 of ice time. No one player should be expected to pick up Werenski's big minutes but Jake Bean and Adam Boqvist should both see an increase in ice time.

  • Blue Jackets' Zach Werenski: Tests positive for COVID-19

Werenski missed practice Monday after testing positive for COVID-19 and was retesting, Aaron Portzline of The Athletic reports.

Based on the team's update, it appears Werenski hasn't been officially placed in the NHL's COVID-19 protocols yet as the team awaits the results of his secondary tests. If the blueliner is unable to play against the Lightning on Tuesday, Jake Bean and Andrew Peeke could b both see significant upticks in ice time while Adam Boqvist would be the favorite to move into Werrenski's spot on the No. 1 power-play unit. For his part, Werenski has tallied 20 points in 30 contests this year and is on pace to easily reach the 40-point threshold for the fourth time in his six-year NHL career.

  • Blue Jackets' Zach Werenski: Joins training camp

Werenski (abdomen) practiced with the Blue Jackets on Thursday, Blue Jackets team reporter Jeff Svoboda reports.

Werenski skated with the second of three groups Thursday. The 24-year-old signed a six-year contract extension and figures to be the cornerstone of the defense over the course of the contract. He's reached 10 goals four times and 40 points three times in his five-year career so far, so he should be a top target for fantasy managers who need a high-scoring blueliner.

  • Blue Jackets' Zach Werenski: Inks long-term extension

Werenski (abdomen) signed a six-year, $57.5 million extension with the Blue Jackets on Thursday, Blue Jackets team reporter Jeff Svoboda reports.

The deal, which runs through 2027-28, will keep the star blueliner with the Blue Jackets until he's 31 years old. Werenski's season ended early in 2020-21 as he required surgery on a sports hernia, but he still picked up 20 points in 35 contests. He's topped the 40-point mark in three of his five NHL seasons and should take on a leadership role as the Blue Jackets attempt to retool their roster in the next year or two.

  • Blue Jackets' Zach Werenski: WIll miss rest of season

Werenski is set to undergo surgery to address an inguinal/sports hernia and will miss the rest of the 2020-21 campaign. The 24-year-old blueliner has also been placed on injured reserve.

If Columbus was still in a good spot to make the playoffs Werenski may have continued to play through his injury, but the Blue Jackets have gone 2-7-1 in their last 10 contests, and they're currently in seventh place in the eight-team Central division with just 14 games remaining in the season. Werenski will finish the campaign having totaled seven goals and 20 points while posting a minus-9 rating in 35 games.

  • Blue Jackets' Zach Werenski: Pots OT winner Saturday

Werenski scored the game-winner in overtime and added an assist in Saturday's 4-3 victory over the Stars.

The 24-year-old blueliner has had a tough season so far, struggling to get going offensively between injuries, but Werenski was in the right place at the right time to scoop up the rebound on an Oliver Bjorkstrand shot and beat a scrambling Jake Oettinger with only five seconds left in OT. Werenski has a modest three-game point streak going, and Saturday's good fortune might have been just what he needed to start making up for lost time.

  • Blue Jackets' Zach Werenski: Two helpers against Wings

Werenski picked up two assists, one on the power play, in Tuesday's 4-1 win over the Red Wings.

Remarkably, it's Werenski's first multi-point performance of the season, as injuries have contributed to his slow start. The blueliner has only one goal and seven points through 17 games, but now that he's healthy he's capable of ramping up his production in a hurry.
