Jordin Tootoo: Hangs up skates
Tootoo announced his retirement from professional hockey Friday in a post on his personal Twitter account.
The 35-year-old acted mainly as an enforcer during parts of 13 seasons in the NHL, which included stops in Nashville, Detroit, New Jersey and Chicago. Across 723 career regular-season contests, Tootoo registered only 161 points (65 goals), instead making his greatest fantasy impact in terms of penalty minutes and hits. He last appeared in the NHL with the Blackhawks in 2016-17, suiting up in 50 games and serving as a bottom-six forward.

Blackhawks' Jordin Tootoo: Placed on waivers
The Blackhawks waived Tootoo (upper body) on Wednesday, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reports.
Tootoo has evidently overcome the upper-body ailment that landed him on long-term injured reserve earlier this season, but the Blackhawks don't have a spot for the gritty winger on their roster, and likely won't at any point this campaign. The 34-year-old forward may opt to hang up his skates and retire from the NHL instead of reporting to Chicago's AHL affiliate.

Tootoo could return to the big club later this season, but even if he's able to do so, he won't be stepping into a role that will make him a viable fantasy option. The gritty winger can be ignored in all formats.

The nature of Tootoo's ailment remains a mystery, but it became clear that he wouldn't have a meaningful role with the Blackhawks this season after he was waived by the team Monday, so this move makes a lot of sense for Chicago financially. It wouldn't be surprising to see Tootoo announce his retirement after the 2017-18 campaign.

Tootoo was waived by Chicago on Monday, Rick Ralph of TSN 1290 Winnipeg reports.
Though Tootoo managed to score 30 points in 2011-12, he's been a grinding, energy guy for the entirety of his career. With the league trending towards youth, speed and skill, there isn't much room in the NHL for the 34-year-old. If the former Predator goes unclaimed, he'll likely be assigned to AHL Rockford for the start of the season.

Tootoo (illness) is expected to be in the lineup for Friday's game against the Islanders.
Tootoo's inclusion in Friday evening's lineup is more out of necessity than anything else, as the Blackhawks will be without forwards Artem Anisimov (lower body) and Nick Schmaltz (illness) against the Isles. Tootoo will slot into a bottom-six role for the contest, skating with Andrew Desjardins and Dennis Rasmussen on Chicago's fourth line. The veteran enforcer has zero points in 36 games with the Blackhawks this season, so he isn't worth owning in season-long formats.

Blackhawks' Jordin Tootoo: Signs extension
Tootoo (illness) signed a one-year extension worth $700,000 on Tuesday, Pierre LeBrun of ESPN reports.
The veteran forward has rotated in and out of the lineup all season long, going pointless in 36 contests. It would be slightly unfair to say that Tootoo has played poorly this season, as he's filled the role he was expected to play, but it's highly doubtful that the Hawks would have offered him an extension without the summer's expansion draft looming. With Tootoo signed through 2017-18, Chicago will now be able to protect 2013 first-round pick Ryan Hartman, who's scored 15 goals in his debut campaign.

Tootoo (illness) missed practice Sunday for the second day in a row, Brian Hedger of NHL.com reports.
It seems likely that the winger will miss Sunday's game if this bug is serious enough to make him miss two days of practice. He's been a healthy scratch for most of the last two months, so his presence won't be missed much, anyway.

Tootoo wasn't expected to be in the starting rotation regardless of his illness, so it's doubtful he plays Sunday against the Blues. The 34-year-old blueliner hasn't recorded a point in his 36 appearances this year, where he has only averaged 6:32 of ice time anyway. This kind of ice time doesn't warrant a start in any leagues.

Tootoo has had some value in leagues that count PIM in the past due to his desire to drop the gloves, but his 16 PIM through 35 games with Chicago this campaign simply won't cut it. His lack of contributions in peripheral categories coupled with his non-existent offensive production keeps him from being a viable option in any fantasy format.
