  • Capitals' Ryan Leonard: Earns first playoff point

Leonard provided an assist and three shots on goal in Wednesday's 3-1 win over the Canadiens in Game 2.

Leonard has stayed in the Capitals' lineup since April 1 after signing his entry-level deal a day earlier. The 20-year-old is in a bottom-six role during the playoffs, though he's also involved on the power play. He has a helper, four shots, three hits and a plus-1 rating through two playoff outings. While he has a bright future ahead, his role is likely to be limited this postseason as he continues to adjust to the NHL.

  • Capitals' Ryan Leonard: Deposits first goal into empty net

Leonard scored an empty-net goal on four shots, added two PIM and logged two hits in Friday's 5-3 win over the Blackhawks.

It took Leonard just three games to put his name on an NHL scoresheet, and he did so in the same contest that Alex Ovechkin tied Wayne Gretzky for the all-time goals record. It'll be a memorable moment for Leonard, who has slotted right into a middle-six role while racking up five shots on net, nine hits and a plus-1 rating over three appearances. The eighth overall pick from 2023 has tremendous scoring upside, but fantasy managers in redraft formats may want to wait until 2025-26 to take a gamble on him.

He captained Team USA to a gold medal at the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship, posting five goals and 10 points in seven games en route to being named the tournament MVP. The Capitals selected the 20-year-old forward with the No. 8 pick in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft. Leonard could make his Washington debut versus Boston on Tuesday.

  • Capitals' Ryan Leonard: Named World Juniors MVP

Leonard was named the MVP of the 2024-25 World Junior Championship on Sunday, Tony Ferrari of The Hockey News reports.

Leonard has been a frequent presence for Team USA in recent months, as he also represented the nation at the 2024 IIHF World Championship in May of 2024. The 19-year-old helped lead the United States to gold and earned tournament MVP honors at the World Junior Championship by tallying five goals, five assists, 12 PIM and a plus-10 rating over seven games. Leonard was the eighth overall pick by the Capitals in 2023, and he's in the midst of his sophomore season at Boston College. Over 16 appearances for Boston College this year, he's racked up 12 goals, seven assists, 14 PIM and a plus-11 rating.

  • Capitals' Ryan Leonard: Headed to World Championship

Leonard will represent Team USA at the 2024 IIHF World Championship, Bailey Johnson of The Washington Post reports.

Leonard is coming off a tremendous freshman campaign with Boston College in which he tallied 31 goals and 60 points in 41 games. The 19-year-old winger has committed to returning to the NCAA ranks for the 2024-25 season, but his all-around game projects well at the NHL level whenever he decides to turn pro.
