Top Capitals News

  • Capitals' Ryan Leonard: One of each in slugfest

Leonard recorded a goal, picked up an assist, put two shots on net and recorded three hits in Tuesday's 6-5 loss to Dallas.

Leonard slid the primary helper on Boone Jenner's tally late in the second period before later bringing the Capitals within one goal with a tally of his own late in the third. Overall, the 21-year-old Leonard is up to five goals, 10 points, 37 shots on net and 26 hits over 14 outings this season. Tuesday's pair of points helped him snap his four-game scoreless skid. He's back on track to surpass the 20-goal, 45-point targets he posted across 75 regular-season outings in his rookie campaign. Leonard is a solid waiver-wire add in deep leagues that place a premium on players who deliver hits alongside offensive contributions.

  • Capitals' Dylan Strome: Helps out twice on power play

Strome distributed two power-play assists and placed three shots on net in Tuesday's 6-5 loss to the Stars.

Strome plated the primary pass on each of the Capitals' two power-play goals Tuesday. Overall, the 29-year-old center is up to 11 assists, 14 points, 29 shots on net and 12 blocked shots over 13 appearances this season. He has three multi-point outings across his last five games, which should allow him to continue in his top-six role for the Caps moving forward. Strome is a notable waiver-wire addition in points-only fantasy leagues with 10 people or more.

  • Capitals' Justin Sourdif: Finds twine late in loss

Sourdif scored a goal, recorded a plus-3 rating, put two shots on net and dished out four hits in Tuesday's 6-5 loss to Dallas.

Sourdif refused to let the Capitals' chances dwindle away late in Tuesday's third period, as he recorded his third goal of the season to cut the deficit to a pair of goals. He was the lone player to post a plus-3 rating Tuesday despite the Stars compiling six goals. Overall, the 24-year-old center now has four points, a plus-2 rating and 24 hits across 12 games this season. He has goals in back-to-back contests for the first time in his two full seasons at the NHL level, which could propel Sourdif to fantasy relevance in deep fantasy leagues that value banger stats.

  • Capitals' Boone Jenner: Adds goal in barn burner

Jenner recorded a goal, went plus-2, fired four shots on net and dished out two hits in Tuesday's 6-5 loss to the Stars.

Jenner scored his second goal over his last three outings late in Tuesday's second period to help the Capitals fight back from a 5-1 deficit. With Tuesday's twine finder, he now has six goals, seven points, a plus-1 rating, 30 shots on net, 20 hits and 13 blocked shots over 14 outings this season. The 33-year-old is finding his footing as a goal scorer in his first season with Washington. While he might not reach the 30-goal mark for the second time in his 14-year career by the end of the current campaign, Jenner could get back to being a 20-plus goal scorer. He's a solid streaming option in deep fantasy leagues.

  • Capitals' Jakob Chychrun: Ends goal drought on power play

Chychrun tallied a power-play goal, picked up an assist and launched five shots on net in Tuesday's 6-5 loss to Dallas.

Chychrun started off Tuesday's contest minus-4 before he drastically turned things around. The 28-year-old defenseman tallied a power-play goal late in the second period to cut the Stars' lead to just two goals before he later added a secondary helper on the Capitals' final goal of the night. Overall, Chychrun now has two goals, 11 points, 46 shots on net and 26 blocked shots over 14 games this season. Despite taking a step back in the goal-scoring department so far this season, he's still firing the puck at will, as he ranks third among NHL defensemen in shots on goal. If he's able to work past his career-low 2.4 shooting percentage, Chychrun will return to being an elite fantasy option in all formats. For now, he's still serviceable in all league types given his two-way value.

  • Capitals' Jordan Kyrou: Registers three points in loss

Kyrou scored a power-play goal and dished out two assists in Tuesday's 6-5 loss to the Stars.

Kyrou brought the Capitals' offense to life Tuesday with his power-play goal midway through the second period, which cut the team's deficit to three goals. He later picked up two assists to post his first three-point game since Jan. 29. The 28-year-old winger has been finding his groove lately, as he's posted at least one point in eight of his last 10 games. Overall, he's up to five goals, 14 points and 23 shots on net across 14 outings this season. Given his newfound comfort in the Caps' top six, Kyrou is a strong waiver-wire pickup in shallow fantasy leagues due to his upside of 70-plus points.

  • Capitals' Charlie Lindgren: Surrenders two goals in relief

Lindgren turned aside 10 of the 12 shots on net he saw in Tuesday's 6-5 loss to Dallas.

Lindgren entered Tuesday's game early in the second period after Oettinger conceded his fourth goal of the night. Lindgren did well to slow the bleeding, as he allowed just one tally in each of the final two periods. Overall, the 32-year-old netminder now owns a 3-2-0 record, a 3.08 GAA and an .881 save percentage. While Thompson's struggles have left the door open for Lindgren to steal more work between the pipes, the latter hasn't inspired in his limited work this season. He remains off the fantasy radar until he can consistently earn wins through a strong save percentage.

  • Capitals' Logan Thompson: Gets the hook Tuesday

Thompson stopped seven of the 11 shots on net he saw in Tuesday's 6-5 loss to the Stars.

Thompson was taken out of Tuesday's contest after he allowed Jason Robertson to post a hat trick against him across just six minutes in the second period. Thompson narrowly avoided being handed the loss Tuesday, maintaining his 5-4-0 record, but he now possesses a 3.22 GAA and an .887 save percentage across 10 appearances. His recent stretch of play has been defined by some of his biggest struggles since arriving in Washington D.C. ahead of the 2024-25 campaign. He remains a fantasy-relevant goalie given his ceiling, but he's far from a true No. 1 option between the pipes in fantasy due to his current stats.

  • Capitals' Logan Thompson: Facing Stars

Thompson will patrol the home crease in Tuesday's clash against the Stars, per Sammi Silber of The District Standard.

Thompson has alternated results across his last five appearances, with his last appearances being a 5-1 loss to the Wild on Sunday. Overall, the 29-year-old backstop has a 5-4-0 record, a 2.93 GAA and an .898 save percentage across nine appearances. While he hasn't lived up to where he was being selected in fantasy drafts ahead of the 2026-27 campaign, he remains a low-end No. 1 goalie option given his command over the opportunities for Washington. While the Stars offense has underperformed this season with just 2.56 goals per game, Thompson remains a boom or bust fantasy option for Tuesday given his recent results.

  • Capitals' Justin Sourdif: Nets lone goal in loss

Sourdif scored a goal on two shots and added three hits in Sunday's 5-1 loss to the Wild.

Sourdif has two points over four games since he returned from an illness. The 24-year-old center was on a line with Alex Ovechkin and Anthony Beauvillier for Sunday's contest. The Capitals' forward lines are largely fluid in role with the depth of the team's roster. Sourdif has had a somewhat quiet start to the campaign with three points, 11 shots on net and 20 hits across 11 appearances.

  • Capitals' Logan Thompson: Beaten four times Sunday

Thompson stopped 24 of 28 shots in Sunday's 5-1 loss to the Wild. Minnesota's fourth goal was an empty-netter.

Thompson surrendered two goals in the opening six minutes but kept Washington within striking distance until Maxim Shabanov's late power-play tally. The netminder finished with an .857 save percentage as the Capitals' three-game winning streak ended. Despite the disappointing outing, Thompson's established starting role and Washington's competitive roster should continue providing substantial fantasy value. His uneven record may raise eyebrows, though. He's gone 5-4-0 with a 2.93 GAA and an .898 save percentage in nine starts.

  • Capitals' Logan Thompson: Starting against Wild

Thompson will start Sunday's home matchup against Minnesota, per Sammi Silber of The District Standard.

Thompson is coming off a 23-save performance in a 5-2 win over Philadelphia on Wednesday. He has permitted 22 goals on 227 shots during his 5-3-0 start to the 2026-27 campaign. Minnesota (9-3-3) is tied for 18th in the league this season with 3.13 goals per game.

  • Capitals' Dylan McIlrath: Going on waivers

McIlrath was placed on waivers Sunday, per Tom Gulitti of NHL.com.

McIlrath hasn't posted a point in four NHL outings with Washington this season, but he has earned three hits and two blocked shots. If he clears waivers, he will likely head to AHL Hershey.

  • Capitals' Remi Poirier: Dealt to Washington

Washington acquired Poirier from New Jersey on Sunday in exchange for a 2027 seventh-round pick.

Poirier didn't log any playing time with the Devils after being claimed off waivers from Dallas on Sept. 27. The 25-year-old netminder is still waiting to make his NHL debut. He posted a 27-19-6 record, a 2.61 GAA and a .912 save percentage in 52 AHL regular-season appearances for Texas in 2025-26.

... See More ... See Less
  • Capitals' Ethen Frank: Stuck outside of lineup

Frank was scratched for the 10th time in 12 games in Thursday's 4-3 win over the Predators.

Frank made a pair of appearances when the Capitals were dealing with injuries earlier in October, but he has no clear path to playing time. He's also competing with Ivan Miroshnichenko for a chance to play if an opening pops up. Frank had 24 points in 62 regular-season outings in 2025-26, but the Capitals' offseason additions have greatly reduced his opportunities in 2026-27.

... See More ... See Less
  • Capitals' Jack St. Ivany: Adds two more assists

St. Ivany produced two assists and two hits in Thursday's 4-3 win over the Predators.

St. Ivany is looking like a good waiver claim for the Capitals. He's earned four assists over two outings with his new team after being held off the scoresheet in four games with the Jets to begin the year. The defenseman has a total of two shots on net, eight hits, seven blocked shots and a plus-2 rating over six outings, so he could offer a little physicality in a third-pairing role. He'll get at least a month to prove himself while Vincent Desharnais (appendectomy) is sidelined.
