Dolphins' Alexander Mattison: Injury not career-ending
Mattison (neck), who was placed on season-ending IR on Monday, does not have a career-ending injury, David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
Mattison suffered a neck injury during Sunday's preseason tie against the Bears that required surgery, and it will cause him to miss the entire 2025 season. It's encouraging that the running back may return in 2026, though given that he inked only a one-year deal with Miami this offseason, it's likely that his next opportunity will come with another organization. With Mattison on IR, both second-year pro Jaylen Wright and rookie sixth-rounder Ollie Gordon will benefit from a clearer path to touches behind starter De'Von Achane.

Dolphins' Alexander Mattison: Moves to injured reserve
The Dolphins placed Mattison (neck) on injured reserve Monday.
Mattison emerged from Sunday's preseason tie with the Bears with neck soreness and then reportedly underwent neck surgery not longer afterward, per Adam Schefter of ESPN. With Mattison's move to IR, the severity of the injury more or less has been confirmed, and he'll miss the 2025 season, barring getting cut with an injury settlement. Both Jaylen Wright and rookie Ollie Gordon now both have clearer paths to locked-in reserve roles behind Miami's top RB De'Von Achane.

Dolphins' Alexander Mattison: Season-ending injury, per report
Mattison reportedly underwent season-ending neck surgery Sunday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Further confirmation is needed from the Dolphins, but it looks like Mattison, who hurt his neck during Sunday's game against the Bears, is a candidate for IR. In Mattison's looming absence, look for the team to add depth to a backfield that also includes De'Von Achane, Jaylen Wright and Ollie Gordon. Per Schefter, Miami plans to host Jamaal Williams for a workout Monday.

Dolphins' Alexander Mattison: Managing soreness
Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said Sunday that Mattison is "doing well" after being forced out of Miami's preseason game against the Bears due to "neck and shoulder soreness," David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
McDaniel confirmed that Mattison currently isn't in the concussion protocol, per Furones. The veteran running back looked capable before leaving the field Sunday, recording three carries for eight yards and a score plus one catch for 21 yards on two targets.
