The southpaw was sharp, retiring the side on just eight pitches, as he logged his first save of the season and just the second in his major-league career. Since returning from the IL in August, Montgomery's posted a 4.63 ERA with a 1.03 WHIP and 17:6 K:BB over 23.1 innings.

The left-hander entered for the ninth inning with Pittsburgh holding a 2-1 advantage, and he closed things out in strong form by punching out the side in order to record his 17th save of 2026. Yankees' Bradley Hanner: Back in majors
The Yankees recalled Hanner from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday.
Hanner will return to the Bronx to replenish the Yankees' bullpen depth following Clarke Schmidt's (biceps) move to the IL. Although he boasts a 2.35 ERA in 57.1 frames at Triple-A, Hanner will almost certainly be limited to low-leverage work with the big club after giving up seven earned runs in 5.1 MLB innings.
-
Clarke Schmidt RP | NYY
Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Placed on IL
The Yankees placed Schmidt on the 15-day injured list Thursday with right bicep neuritis, retroactive to Monday.
Schmidt's move to the injured list will officially rule him out for the AL Wild Card Series and the start of the ALDS, but there's a chance that the Yankees may shut the 30-year-old down for the season and focus on getting him ready for 2027. He appeared in just one regular-season game this year, allowing two hits and recording two strikeouts in two-thirds of an inning Sept. 16 against Minnesota. Bradley Hanner will come up to fill the open bullpen spot.
