Rangers' Cal Quantrill: Ready for next turn in rotation

Quantrill said Thursday that his back is fine, and he will make his next scheduled start this weekend against the Blue Jays, Jeff Wilson of AllDLLS.com reports.

Quantrill pitched through some back tightness during his previous start Sunday versus the Diamondbacks, but the issue no longer looks to be a concern. The Rangers haven't yet announced when the right-hander will take the ball, but he'll likely start Saturday. Quantrill has provided an unexpected boost to the Rangers rotation, contributing a 1.82 ERA over his last nine starts.

  • Mason Barnett RP | ATH

    Athletics' Mason Barnett: Starting Friday

The Athletics will recall Barnett from Triple-A Las Vegas to start Friday's game against the Guardians, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Barnett owns a 7.08 ERA and 1.62 WHIP through 40.2 innings in the majors this season. He hasn't fared much better in four starts since returning to the minors in mid-August (6.97 ERA, 1.84 WHIP), though he delivered a nine-inning, two-run gem for Las Vegas his last time out Saturday. He'll be welcomed back to the big leagues by a Guardians lineup that's been trending upward while posting a .748 OPS over its last 10 games.

  • Joc Pederson DH | TEX

Rangers' Joc Pederson: Out of Texas lineup

Pederson (hand) is not in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Red Sox.

Pederson suffered a small fracture in his left hand when he was hit by a pitch Saturday. He hasn't played since then, but the Rangers are facing a righty in Sonny Gray for the first time during that span. Pederson is aiming to play through the injury, but clearly he's not feeling well enough to do so just yet. Josh Jung is slotting in at designated hitter for Texas on Thursday.

  • Athletics' Jeffrey Springs: Takes 14th loss

Springs (4-14) took the loss Thursday against the Rays, allowing six runs on five hits and two walks over 3.1 innings. He struck out four.

Things started off well for Springs, who held Tampa Bay scoreless through three innings. The fourth frame was a different story, however, as the left-hander gave up six runs on four hits, two walks and a hit batter while recording just one out. Coming into the day, Springs had allowed only two runs over 12 innings across his prior two outings. His ERA now sits at 6.18 across 28 starts (138.1 innings) this season with a 1.47 WHIP and 109:56 K:BB. He's currently in line to face the Angels at home his next time out.

  • Rays' Drew Rasmussen: Improves to 15-5

Rasmussen (15-5) earned the win Thursday over the A's, allowing four hits and two walks over five scoreless innings. He struck out three.

It was another strong outing from Rasmussen, who's given up just five runs over 31 innings in his last five starts. The right-hander's ERA is down to 2.72 across 29 starts (165.1 innings) this season with a 0.93 WHIP and 163:29 K:BB. Rasmussen currently lines up to face the Yankees on the road his next time out.

  • Royals' Vinnie Pasquantino: Getting breather Thursday

Pasquantino is absent from the lineup for Thursday's game in Houston.

After going 1-for-7 with a home run in the first two games of the series, Pasquantino will get a breather in the series finale. Salvador Perez will slot in at first base for the Royals in the rubber match.

  • White Sox's Colson Montgomery: Out of Thursday's lineup

Montgomery (wrist) is not in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Tigers.

Montgomery was forced to exit Wednesday's contest versus the Guardians with a left wrist contusion following a hit-by-pitch. X-rays were negative, and the left-handed-hitting Montgomery might not have started Thursday against Detroit southpaw Framber Valdez regardless of the injury. Luisangel Acuna will play shortstop for the White Sox in Thursday's series opener.

  • Astros' Christian Walker: Getting break Thursday

Walker isn't in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Royals, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Walker will get a chance to reset Thursday after going 0-for-16 with five strikeouts over his last five games. LaMonte Wade will fill in at first base and bat ninth.

  • Joey Loperfido LF | HOU

Astros' Joey Loperfido: Sent back to minors

The Astros optioned Loperfido to Triple-A Sugar Land on Thursday, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Loperfido struck out during his lone at-bat after being called up from Triple-A on Tuesday, and he'll now head back to Sugar Land with Taylor Trammell returning from the paternity list.

  • Astros' Taylor Trammell: Back with team

The Astros reinstated Trammell from the paternity list Thursday, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.

After spending a couple of days away from the team while welcoming a new addition to his family, Trammell will return for the final game of Houston's series against Kansas City. Joey Loperfido was sent down to Triple-A Sugar Land in a corresponding move.
