Nationals' Riley Cornelio: Works into third as Tuesday's opener

Cornelio allowed one hit and three walks while striking out four batters across 2.2 scoreless innings while serving as the Nationals' opener in the team's 3-1 win over the Tigers on Tuesday.

Tuesday marked Cornelio's third start of the season, and although he ran his pitch count up to 60 (33 strikes), he did enough to keep the Tigers off the board until turning the keys over to Jackson Kent in the third frame. Cornelio has a 3.89 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 38:28 K:BB across 34.2 major-league innings this season, with the 26-year-old right-hander also spending time in the minors with Triple-A Rochester.

  • C.J. Abrams SS | WAS

Nationals' CJ Abrams: Crushes two homers Tuesday

Abrams went 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI during the Nationals' 3-1 win over the Tigers on Tuesday.

Abrams supplied all of the offense for the Nationals on Tuesday, starting with a solo homer in the second inning before giving Washington the lead for good with a two-run shot in the seventh. He's gone deep three times in as many games, and Tuesday was his third multi-HR game of the season. Abrams has an .835 OPS with 33 steals, 33 home runs and 102 RBI across 638 plate appearances in 2026.

  • Caleb Thielbar RP | CHC

Cubs' Caleb Thielbar: Takes loss in extras Tuesday

Thielbar (3-4) took the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits over one inning in Tuesday's 8-2 extra-innings loss to the Marlins.

Thielbar worked a scoreless 11th inning before returning for the 12th, but that's when things went south for the left-hander. Thielbar allowed the first batter he faced to drive home the inherited runner at second, and by the time the frame ended, the Marlins had built a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Thielbar's ERA rose to 4.99, and this mark his first outing allowing more than one earned run since Aug. 16.

  • Dustin May SP | MIL

Brewers' Dustin May: Another short outing

May did not factor into the decision Tuesday against the Philies, allowing two runs on one hit and two walks while striking out two batters across two innings.

May was pulled from his start early for a second consecutive outing, after giving up a two-run homer to Brandon Marsh in the second inning. May has failed to complete five innings in six of his last seven starts, posting a 7.84 ERA and 1.74 WHIP across 20.2 innings in that span, which is not the kind of form the Brewers were hoping for out of the right-hander so close to the playoffs. He's currently lined up to take on the Cardinals at home this weekend.

  • Josh Ekness RP | MIA

Marlins' Josh Ekness: Earns win in extras

Ekness (3-4) earned the win after walking one and striking out two over a hitless and scoreless inning in Tuesday's 8-2 extra-innings victory over the Cubs.

Ekness handled the bottom of the 11th inning with the game still tied 2-2, working around a two-out walk to keep Chicago off the board. Miami then erupted for six runs in the top of the 12th, putting Ekness in position for his third victory. The right-hander lowered his ERA to 3.54 with this scoreless appearance, and he's ending the season on a strong note, not allowing a run in his last five appearances.

  • Jhoan Duran RP | PHI

Phillies' Jhoan Duran: Secures save against Milwaukee

Duran earned the save in Tuesday's 6-4 win over the Brewers, allowing one run on one hit and one walk while striking out two in the ninth inning.

The Phillies jumped out to a 6-3 lead thanks to a three-run eighth inning, prompting the team to send out Duran in the ninth to secure the win. The 28-year-old right-hander was cruising after striking out the first two batters he faced before giving up an RBI single, but Duran managed to lock down the win for the Phillies for his 33rd save of the season, ninth most in the majors. He's earned the save in each of his last four outings and has a 1.88 ERA and 1.03 WHIP across 57.1 innings this season.

  • Janson Junk SP | MIA

Marlins' Janson Junk: Fires five scoreless innings

Junk didn't factor into the decision Tuesday against the Cubs after allowing two hits and a walk while striking out six over five scoreless innings. He also tossed a wild pitch.

Junk kept Chicago off the board while Miami built a 1-0 lead, allowing just two hits before departing after five innings. Junk's six strikeouts tied his season high, and the scoreless performance lowered his ERA to 4.31. He's given up one earned run or zero in six of his last seven outings, posting a 4.10 ERA in that stretch.

  • Zack Wheeler SP | PHI

Phillies' Zack Wheeler: Makes history Tuesday

Wheeler did not factor into the decision Tuesday against the Brewers, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk while striking out 11 across 5.2 innings.

Wheeler set the tone early by striking out the side in the first inning, with his third punchout being the 2,000th of his career. The hard-throwing right-hander wasn't done there, as he proceeded to strike out each of the next four batters he faced, setting a franchise record of seven straight punchouts to start a game. Wheeler is lined up to throw this weekend at home against the Rays, though he could be pushed back for the NL Wild Card Series next week, depending how the playoff picture unfolds. He has a 13-5 record over 27 starts with a 3.06 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 188:47 K:BB over 156 innings this season.

  • Vimael Machin 3B | COL

Rockies' Vimael Machin: Outrighted to Triple-A

The Rockies outrighted Machin to Triple-A Albuquerque on Tuesday.

Machin was removed from the 40-man roster last week and has since passed through waivers. Because he's been outrighted previously, Machin has the ability to decline the Rockies' outright assignment and become a free agent. However, it's unclear what the infielder's plans are.

  • Mickey Moniak LF | COL

Rockies' Mickey Moniak: Smacks 23rd homer

Moniak went 1-for-3 with a solo home run Tuesday against the Diamondbacks.

Moniak led off the third inning with his 23rd home run of the season, a small positive in what has otherwise been a slow September. He has hit only .170 across 53 at-bats for the month while striking out 38.2 percent of the time, and a slow second half has dropped his overall batting average to .242 on the season. Nevertheless, Moniak is one long ball away from matching his career high.
