The injuries are starting to pile up at running back, and we had two prominent guys go down in Week 4 with David Montgomery (knee) and Joe Mixon (ankle). Hopefully, their replacement options can become potential Fantasy starters in the majority of leagues.

Let's start in Chicago, where Montgomery is expected to miss 4-5 weeks with a knee sprain. That should allow Damien Williams (16 percent rostered on CBS Sports) the chance to be the featured running back for the Bears, and he should be the top priority off the waiver wire.

Williams is dealing with a thigh bruise, but he's expected to be OK for Week 5 at Las Vegas. And if he starts, consider Williams a No. 2 running back in all leagues. He's worth adding for at least 25 percent of your remaining FAAB budget, but you might see Williams go for much more than that to a running back-needy team.

We know Williams should get plenty of work in place of Montgomery, who averaged 18.8 total touches per game this year. Williams just had eight carries for 55 yards and a touchdown in Week 4 against Detroit, along with two catches for 15 yards on two targets.

In case the thigh injury for Williams is a problem then you should plan to add Khalil Herbert (1 percent) as well with a secondary waiver move. Herbert is worth up to 5 percent of your remaining FAAB.

For the Bengals, Mixon is considered day-to-day by coach Zac Taylor, although ESPN reported that Mixon is week-to-week with a low-ankle sprain. Clearly, there's still a chance Mixon can play in Week 5 against Green Bay. But if he's out, Samaje Perine (8 percent rostered) would likely start, and he's worth adding in all leagues as the No. 2 player off the waiver wire behind Williams.

Perine could share playing time with Chris Evans (2 percent rostered), who could work on passing downs, but there should be enough work to make Perine a flex against the Packers. Mixon has averaged 22.5 total touches per game this year.

In terms of FAAB, Perine is worth up to 15 percent of your remaining budget. I wouldn't want to overpay for Perine in case Mixon plays in Week 5, but he did miss 10 games in 2020 with a foot injury. Evans is worth 1 percent of your remaining FAAB just to see what role he has in tandem with Perine.

There are other running backs to add in case you can't get Williams or Perine, including Kenneth Gainwell, Brandon Bolden, Jeremy McNichols, Darrel Williams, Alex Collins and Jeff Wilson. We'll get into those guys and more at other positions below, and this should be a busy week on the waiver wire.

Editor's note: For this waiver wire column, we are only looking at players rostered in less than 65 percent of CBS Sports leagues.

Running Backs
  • Injuries: Christian McCaffrey (hamstring), David Montgomery (knee), Joe Mixon (ankle), Elijah Mitchell (shoulder), Peyton Barber (foot), Tony Jones (ankle), Giovani Bernard (knee), JaMycal Hasty (ankle) and Rashaad Penny (calf)
  • Drop list: Ty'Son Williams (91 percent rostered), Kenyan Drake (80 percent), Ronald Jones (64 percent) and Mark Ingram (63 percent). Williams might return as the Ravens lead running back at some point this year, but Fantasy managers in 10-team leagues or fewer can move on after Williams was inactive in Week 4 at Denver with Le'Veon Bell joining the active roster. ... Drake had one carry and no catches in Week 4 at the Chargers with Josh Jacobs back. It's clear Drake isn't going to get extended work for the Raiders unless Jacobs and Barber both miss time. ... Jones scored in Week 4 at New England, but he still has seven total touches or fewer in every game this year, with only one reception. He won't have increased Fantasy value as long as Leonard Fournette is healthy. ... Ingram scored 14 PPR points in Week 1 against Jacksonville and has combined for 10 PPR points in three games since. He's also combined for just 13 total touches in his past two games against Carolina and Buffalo.
  • Check to see if available: J.D. McKissic (73 percent rostered), Latavius Murray (71 percent) and A.J. Dillon (65 percent). McKissic has scored at least 16 PPR points in two of his past three games, and he's worth using as a flex option in PPR most weeks, including Week 5 against the Saints. ... Murray is now the lead running back in Baltimore after he had 18 carries in Week 4 at Denver. He only managed 59 rushing yards, but he scored a touchdown for the third time in four games. Murray will be a weekly flex if he continues to get this kind of work, with his value higher in non-PPR leagues. ... Dillon is a lottery ticket in case something ever happens to Aaron Jones. And Dillon just had a season-high 16 total touches in Week 4 against Pittsburgh and finished with 96 total yards, so more work could be coming in tandem with Jones.

As stated above, Williams is the No. 1 running back and player overall to add this week with Montgomery looking at potentially a five-week absence with his knee injury. Williams faces the Raiders this week, who have allowed a running back to score in every game this season, with six total touchdowns allowed to running backs on the year. Williams is worth at least 25 percent of your remaining FAAB budget, but if you need a running back badly then don't hesitate to spend around 50 percent given his expected role with Montgomery out. If you miss on Williams then take a flyer on Khalil Herbert (1 percent rostered) for 1 percent of your remaining FAAB, and keep in mind Williams is dealing with a thigh bruise, although he's expected to play against Las Vegas.

It sounds like there's a chance Mixon could play in Week 5 against Green Bay, so keep that in mind when adding Perine. But if Perine does start for Mixon in Week 5 or beyond then he could be a useful flex option if he steps into Mixon's role as a rusher. He won't be as good, but Mixon had at least 18 carries in each of the first three games and got 16 carries in Week 4 against Jacksonville before getting hurt. Last year, when Mixon missed 10 games with a foot injury, Perine had three games with at least 10 carries and averaged 14.3 PPR points in those outings. He's worth adding in all leagues for 10-15 percent of your remaining FAAB. And you can take a flyer on Chris Evans (2 percent rostered) for 1 percent of your FAAB in case he has an increased role also.

Miles Sanders is still playing more snaps than Gainwell, but the Eagles are continuing to give the rookie more work. In Week 4 against the Chiefs, Gainwell had three carries for 31 yards and a touchdown, along with six catches for 58 yards on eight targets. By comparison, Sanders had eight carries for 47 yards, along with three catches for 34 yards on three targets. I don't expect Gainwell to start playing ahead of Sanders, but it's clear Gainwell has a prominent role that isn't going away. And should something happen to Sanders, Gainwell could be a potential starter in all leagues. He's worth adding where available for at least 10 percent of your remaining FAAB.

Bolden stepped into James White's role as the pass-catching running back for the Patriots in Week 4 against Tampa Bay, and he finished with six catches for 51 yards on six targets. We'll see if J.J. Taylor or Rhamondre Stevenson can eventually get work in tandem with Damien Harris, but Bolden is worth adding in all PPR leagues if he stays as White's replacement. This is now three of four outings where either White or Bolden had six catches in a game, so you know Mac Jones will continue to lean on Bolden in this role. He's worth up to 10 percent of your remaining FAAB in PPR leagues and up to 5 percent in non-PPR.

McNichols is worth adding for two reasons heading into Week 5 against Jacksonville. For starters, if A.J. Brown (hamstring) and Julio Jones (hamstring) remain out again, McNichols will likely be heavily involved in the passing game like he was in Week 4. He had eight catches for 74 yards on 12 targets, and Ryan Tannehill could again lean on him. McNichols also could be a lottery ticket in case anything happens to Derrick Henry, so he's not a bad stash candidate if you have an open roster spot. He's worth 5 percent of your remaining FAAB.

It's time to start stashing Wilson if you have an open roster spot, and he could return to action as early as Week 7 once he's eligible to come off the PUP list. Bell made his Baltimore debut in Week 4 at Denver and played behind Murray with 20 snaps for four carries and 11 yards, and he failed to catch his lone target. He was placed on the practice squad again Monday, but he could return to the active roster prior to Week 5 against the Colts. We'll see if the Ravens plan to use him more in tandem with Murray, but it's doubtful Bell will have a significant impact when everyone is healthy in Baltimore. That said, if you want to take a flyer on him with an extra roster spot for 1 percent of your remaining FAAB, it can't hurt to see what develops over the next couple of weeks.

Lance showed you his upside in Week 4 against Seattle when he took over for Garoppolo in the second half and scored 24 Fantasy points. He passed for 157 yards and two touchdowns and added 41 rushing yards in relief. Now, there's a chance Garoppolo can still play in Week 5 at Arizona, so take that into consideration before adding Lance, but the initial reports on Garoppolo were his calf injury would sideline him for weeks. If Lance starts in Week 5 he would be considered a low-end Fantasy starter in all leagues. He's worth 5-10 percent of your remaining FAAB budget.

He's going to win you some weeks, and I want to stash him on my bench for when the matchups are right. ... Shepard will hopefully return soon from his hamstring injury, and I would add him in all leagues where available. Mac Jones continues to lean on Meyers, and he's worth starting in PPR moving forward.
  • Drops: JuJu Smith-Schuster (93 percent rostered), Brandon Aiyuk (89 percent), D.J. Chark (85 percent), Will Fuller (81 percent), Jarvis Landry (68 percent) and Mecole Hardman (51 percent). Smith-Schuster and Aiyuk should only be dropped in 10-team leagues or smaller, but clearly it's been a disappointing start for both receivers. Smith-Schuster has fewer than 53 receiving yards in every game this season, has three games with four catches or less and has yet to catch a touchdown. Aiyuk has three games with one catch or less and has yet to top 37 receiving yards in any outing, with one touchdown. ... Chark, Fuller and Landry aren't worth holding while they are injured, unless you have an IR spot, and Chark is likely out for the season. ... Hardman might never be a consistent Fantasy producer, and with Josh Gordon now joining the Chiefs, things could get worse, so it's easy to let him go.

With Valdes-Scantling out in Week 4 against Pittsburgh, Cobb stepped up with five catches for 69 yards and two touchdowns on six targets. He should have the chance to build on that game in Week 5 against the Bengals, and hopefully Cobb remains a key target for Aaron Rodgers until Valdes-Scantling is healthy. Cobb is worth adding for up to 5 percent of your remaining FAAB.

Jefferson has done a nice job for the Rams as their third receiver, and he has two games this season with at least 16 PPR points, including Week 4 against Arizona. He also has six targets in each of his past two outings. He's never going to be a consistent Fantasy option as long as Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods are healthy, but Jefferson could be a No. 3 Fantasy receiver in deeper leagues. He's worth up to 5 percent of your remaining FAAB.

Raymond is looking like the best wide receiver for the Lions over the past two weeks, and he's worth adding for 1 percent of your remaining FAAB. He has 16 targets over that span for nine catches, 114 yards and two touchdowns, and he's scored at least 12 PPR points in each of those outings. We know Jared Goff likes Quintez Cephus as well, and the Lions best receiving threats are T.J. Hockenson, D'Andre Swift and Jamaal Williams. But in deeper leagues, Raymond might help you as a No. 3 Fantasy receiver.

Bateman will hopefully be active in Week 5 for the first time this season after being placed on IR with a groin injury. He'll likely struggle for targets with Marquise Brown, Mark Andrews and Sammy Watkins healthy, but Bateman should be able to make an impact with Lamar Jackson. Bateman is worth stashing for 1 percent of your remaining FAAB.

Tight End
  • Injuries: George Kittle (calf), Rob Gronkowski (ribs), Logan Thomas (hamstring), Tyler Higbee (ankle) and Gerald Everett (illness)
  • Check to see if available: Mike Gesicki (76 percent rostered), Dalton Schultz (72 percent) and Jared Cook (67 percent). In the past two games with Brissett starting, Gesicki had 18 targets, 15 catches, 143 yards and a touchdown, and he scored at least 16 PPR points in those outings. Hopefully, that continues when Tagovailoa returns, as well as when Fuller is healthy. ... Schultz should be considered a must-start tight end right now since he has at least 17 PPR points in two consecutive games, and he has three games this season with at least six targets and six catches. He has 15 targets in his past two outings, and it's nice to see Dak Prescott leaning on him. ... Cook did well Monday night with six catches for 70 yards and a touchdown on seven targets. He now has two games with at least seven targets on the year and should be a low-end starter in most leagues.
  • Drops: Robert Tonyan (69 percent rostered), Austin Hooper (46 percent) and Evan Engram (43 percent). Tonyan is going to score touchdowns, but he only has one on the season and three catches or less in each game. You can find a streamer doing more, so he's someone to consider dropping. ... Hooper has one touchdown on the season and four games in a row with nine PPR points or less. There's little reason to hold onto him now. ... Engram has six targets in his two games this season, but he's combined for just nine PPR points. The Giants receiving corps is crowded when healthy, and Engram will likely struggle for consistent production.

Knox has scored a touchdown in three games in a row, with four touchdowns over that span, and he just had a season-high eight targets and five catches against Houston. He has a potential shootout looming in Week 5 against the Chiefs, and Knox should be considered a borderline starter in all leagues. He's worth adding for at least 10 percent of your remaining FAAB budget.

Brate picked up six targets in Week 4 at New England with Gronkowski out, but he only managed two catches for 29 yards. I'll give him a pass in that game since the weather was bad, and the Patriots are good at defending tight ends. If Gronkowski remains out in Week 5 against Miami, consider Brate a streaming option again. The Dolphins have allowed three touchdowns to tight ends in the past three weeks. Brate is worth 5-10 percent of your remaining FAAB.

Ertz is a better long-term option than Brate if you're looking past Week 5, and Ertz has scored at least 12 PPR points in his past two outings against Dallas and Kansas City. He has 15 targets over that span for 113 yards and a touchdown, and he's proving that he can co-exist with Dallas Goedert in this offense. The Eagles get Carolina in Week 5, and the Panthers just allowed Schultz and Blake Jarwin to score touchdowns. Ertz is worth 5-10 percent of your remaining FAAB.

Henry looks like the lead tight end for the Patriots in terms of playing time, and now he's producing more than Jonnu Smith. While both scored touchdowns in Week 4 against Tampa Bay, Henry had four catches for 32 yards on five targets, while Smith had three catches for 14 yards on five targets as well. It could be uneven for both guys moving forward, but Henry is on the field for at least 68 percent of the time in every game this year. Smith, meanwhile, has been at 50 percent of the snaps or less in each of the past three games. Henry can be used as a low-end starter in deeper leagues, and he's worth up to 5 percent of your remaining FAAB.

When Williams had seven catches for 94 yards in Week 2 against Minnesota, I thought it was just a fluky performance. But then he produced again in Week 4 at the Rams with five catches for 66 yards and a touchdown on five targets. I still question if Williams can produce consistently in this offense with so many weapons, but I would add Williams in tight-end premium leagues to see what happens moving forward. He's worth 1 percent of your remaining FAAB.

Uzomah was a star for the Bengals in Week 4 against the Jaguars with five catches for 95 yards and two touchdowns on six targets. With Higgins out, Uzomah saw a spike in targets, and he delivered. But Higgins is expected to return in Week 5, and that should limit the opportunities for Uzomah in the passing game. He's only worth adding in tight-end premium leagues with 1 percent of your remaining FAAB.

Don't go chasing the production for Alie-Cox in Week 4 at Miami when he had three catches for 42 yards and two touchdowns on five targets, but maybe he could start to develop a rapport with Carson Wentz moving forward. As such, he's worth adding in deeper tight-end premium leagues for 1 percent of your remaining FAAB. Just keep in mind that prior to Week 4, Alie-Cox had three catches for 32 yards on six targets combined in the first three games of the year.
