When a new ownership group and management team comes in, sometimes even the most successful managers get shown the door in favor of a "new direction." Give credit to the new Padres owners for understanding what they have in Bud Black, despite the 55-year-old manager's career 464-509 mark in six seasons in San Diego.
The Padres announced Monday that they picked up Black's options for 2014 and 2015. Black had signed a three-year extension with the two option years in 2010, the same year he was named National League Manager of the Year. Black, who took over when Bruce Bochy headed to San Francisco, has served under three general managers in his time with the Padres. He was hired by Kevin Towers, was given an extension by Jed Hoyer and had his option picked up by Josh Byrnes.
"Buddy has a keen insight into team dynamics and creates a great environment for the players and coaching staff," Byrnes said in statement released by the team. "He is a gifted leader with a terrific mind for the game and a genuine interest and curiosity related to all areas of our organization."
The Padres went 49-37 over the final 86 games of the season.
