  • Tigers' Chad Huffman: Headed to minors camp

The Tigers reassigned Huffman to their minor-league camp Thursday.

Huffman resurfaced in the big leagues for the first time in seven years in 2017, logging 15 plate appearances across 12 games with the Cardinals. The 32-year-old didn't make enough of an impression during his cup of coffee with St. Louis to attract anything more than a minor-league pact from the Tigers over the winter, which made it unlikely from the start of spring training that he would break camp with the big club. He'll likely serve as outfield depth at Triple-A Toledo for the bulk of the 2018 campaign and will need several injuries to hit the Tigers outfield before he receives another look in the big leagues.

  • Tigers' Chad Huffman: Signs minor-league deal with Tigers

Huffman signed a minor-league contract with the Tigers which includes an invitation to spring training.

The 32-year-old spent most of the 2017 season at Triple-A, splitting time between Memphis (Cardinals) and Syracuse (Nationals) while hitting an unremarkable .234/.360/.399 in 87 games at both stops. Huffman has just 36 major-league plate appearances under his belt during his 12-year professional career, so he likely won't make much, if any, impact at the major-league level in 2018.

  • Nationals' Chad Huffman: Joins Nationals on minors pact

The Nationals signed Huffman to a minor-league contract Thursday.

Huffman batted .247/.386/.437 with six home runs in 215 plate appearances for Triple-A Memphis. It doesn't look like he'll ever match the bases he stole in 2016, but he could provide useful depth for Washington if he's called up when rosters expand in September.

  • Chad Huffman: Released by Cardinals

Huffman was outrighted and subsequently granted his unconditional release Tuesday.

He hit .286/.333/.429 with a 40 percent strikeout rate in 15 plate appearances with the big-league club earlier this year, and had a 117 wRC+ at Triple-A, so he will likely catch on elsewhere on a minor-league pact.

  • Cardinals' Chad Huffman: Sent down to minors

Huffman was demoted Sunday to Triple-A Memphis.

Huffman saw limited playing time in the three weeks he spent in St. Louis but went 4-for-14 in 15 plate appearances that almost all came in a pinch-hitting role. At this point in his career, the 32-year-old is likely not much more than organizational depth. Now, he will return to the minors, where he raked the previous two years with 21 home runs and 91 RBI in 165 games.

  • Cardinals' Chad Huffman: Heads to majors

Huffman's contract was purchased from Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday.

Huffman has demolished Triple-A hitting the past two years with 21 home runs and 91 RBI in 165 games, so he'll head to the big leagues to try to provide a jolt to the Cardinals offense. He has the ability to play first base and the corner outfield spots, although he likely projects more as a bench bat unless he takes off at the plate in his second career big-league stint. To make room for him on the active roster, John Gant was optioned to Triple-A Memphis.

  • Cardinals' Chad Huffman: Returns for Memphis

Huffman (hand) is back in action for Triple-A Memphis and is slashing .282/.387/.474 with two homers and an 11:10 K:BB through 78 at-bats.

Huffman left a game May 6 after being hit on the hand by a pitch, but he returned May 12 and has continued his strong start for the Redbirds. He'll stick with Memphis for the time being, though he could earn a promotion to the big club if injuries continue to strike the outfield.

  • Cardinals' Chad Huffman: Exits with apparent hand injury

Huffman left Saturday's game with Triple-A Memphis after being hit on the hand by a pitch, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Not much is known about the injury at this time other than it was enough to warrant removal from the contest. Prior to Saturday's game, the 32-year-old was batting .279 with a pair of home runs in 23 games with the Redbirds.

  • Cardinals' Chad Huffman: Reassigned to Triple-A

Huffman was reassigned to Triple-A Memphis on Thursday, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

The 31-year-old had signed a minor-league contract with the Cardinals on Nov. 15 and struggled in spring training, hitting .222 with just one extra-base hit over 43 plate appearances. Huffman's extensive minor-league career dates back to 2006, and he posted a solid .286/.387/.505 line with 33 doubles, five triples, 17 home runs and 70 RBI for Triple-A Toledo in the Tigers organization in 2016. He's capable of playing the corner outfield spots and could conceivably make a return to the big-league roster in 2017 if injuries strike in the outfield.

  • Cardinals' Chad Huffman: Joins Cardinals on minor league deal

Huffman signed a minor league contract with the Cardinals on Friday that included an invite to spring training, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Huffman posted an impressive .892 OPS with 17 home runs and 33 doubles as a member of the Tigers' Triple-A affiliate in Toledo last season. The Cardinals have plenty of other options at the corner outfield spots and first base, so the 31-year-old will likely have to act as organizational depth unless St. Louis is marred with injuries over the course of the season.
