Josh Tomlin: Option declined
Tomlin (neck) had his team option declined by Atlanta on Saturday.
Tomlin will be paid a $250,000 buyout rather than a $1.25 million salary. The 37-year-old struggled to a 6.57 ERA in 49.1 innings of relief this season and could struggle to earn a major-league deal over the winter given his age and recent performance.... See More ... See Less
Braves' Josh Tomlin: Unlikely to return this weekend
Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said Wednesday that Tomlin (neck) isn't expected to be activated from the injured list before the end of the regular season, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.
Though Tomlin tossed a simulated game Wednesday to seemingly put him in position for a return from the IL this weekend, Snitker indicated the right-hander is merely in the process of ramping up in case Atlanta needs an extra arm out of the bullpen. At this point, Tomlin doesn't look to be in consideration for a spot on Atlanta's postseason roster, should the team beat out Philadelphia for the division title. Before landing on the IL on Aug. 31, Tomlin had surrendered 10 earned runs in 4.1 innings over his final two relief appearances.... See More ... See Less
Braves' Josh Tomlin: Tosses sim game
Tomlin (neck) completed a simulated game Wednesday and could be reinstated from the 10-day injured list this weekend, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.
After making a three-inning rehab appearance for Triple-A Gwinnett on Sept. 17, Tomlin has rejoined the big club to continue his ramp-up program. Assuming his neck checks out fine following Wednesday's throwing session, Tomlin may get the opportunity to pitch out of the bullpen in Atlanta's final series of the regular season versus the Mets in what could amount to a de facto audition for the playoff roster.... Braves' Josh Tomlin: Rehab assignment on tap
Tomlin (neck) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Gwinnett on Friday.
Tomlin has been on the injured list with a neck strain since Aug. 31. Given the length of his absence, the club will likely want him to get two or three outings in with Gwinnett before he rejoins the major-league roster. With that in mind, he could be activated toward the end of next week.... See More ... See Less
Braves' Josh Tomlin: Out with neck strain
Tomlin was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a neck strain.
Tomlin hasn't pitched in a game since Aug. 18, so it's unclear how exactly he picked up the injury. Edgar Santana was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett in a corresponding move.... See More ... See Less
Braves' Josh Tomlin: Earns win in relief
Tomlin (4-0) earned the win in relief Saturday against Philadelphia despite giving up one run on three hits while striking out one across 1.2 innings.
Tomlin entered to pitch in the fifth inning after Drew Smyly left the game with left knee pain, and while he was unable to toss a scoreless inning, he did enough to record his fourth win of the campaign. The veteran has made just four appearances this month and hasn't looked sharp, allowing runs in three of those outings. He has given up eight runs while posting a 4:0 K:BB through five innings in that span.... See More ... See Less
Braves' Josh Tomlin: Stumbles into break
Tomlin has given up seven earned runs over his last two appearances and carries a 5.94 ERA and 1.49 WHIP through 36.1 innings on the season into the All-Star break.
Rough patches are nothing new for the 36-year-old, who was scored upon in eight of nine outings between April 18 and May 16 earlier this season. Tomlin's role on the staff is to soak up low-leverage innings in long relief, and as a result his fantasy value is almost nil even when he is pitching well.... See More ... See Less
Braves' Josh Tomlin: Earns win Thursday
Tomlin (3-0) struck out one in 1.1 perfect innings to earn the win against the Nationals on Thursday.
Tomlin was brought in to record the final out of the sixth inning, and Atlanta scored four runs in the bottom half of the frame to put him in line for the win. The righty has posted a 5.40 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in 26.2 innings across 19 relief appearances to begin the year.... See More ... See Less
Braves' Josh Tomlin: Picks up second win
Tomlin (2-0) allowed three hits and no walks in 1.1 relief innings as he earned the win against the Cubs on Friday.
Tomlin struggled by giving up three runs in 1.1 innings against the Marlins on Tuesday, but he returned to form Friday and picked up his second win of 2021. The right-hander has now posted a 3.86 ERA and 1.43 WHIP in seven innings to begin the season.... See More ... See Less
Braves' Josh Tomlin: Set for bullpen role
Tomlin has posted a 2.25 ERA and 5:0 K:BB through four Grapefruit League innings this spring.
The veteran right-hander has been a solid long reliever/swingman for Atlanta over the last two years with a 4.08 ERA and 1.15 WHIP, and Tomin could be leaned on fairly heavily in the early going as the team looks to manage the workload of the rotation. It's not a particularly fantasy-friendly role, but he might stumble into a win or two with a potent offense at his back.... See More ... See Less
Braves' Josh Tomlin: Remains in Atlanta
Tomlin signed a one-year, $1 million contract with Atlanta on Wednesday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
Tomlin spent the past two seasons in Atlanta, and he'll remain with the team for at least one more season after recording a 4.76 ERA and 36:8 K:BB over 39.2 innings during the abbreviated 2020 campaign. He worked as both a starter and reliever last year, but the 36-year-old should work primarily out of the bullpen in 2021. The deal includes a $1.25 million club option with a $250,000 buyout for 2022.... See More ... See Less
Braves' Josh Tomlin: Working in relief
Tomlin made his most recent appearance for the Braves out of the bullpen, giving up two runs over 2.2 innings in a Sept. 16 outing in Baltimore.
The recent returns of Cole Hamels and Max Fried from the injured list appear to have at least temporarily bumped Tomlin from the rotation, as the Braves have opted to keep younger arms in Kyle Wright and Huascar Ynoa in starting roles over him. Atlanta will need to add another starter to the rotation Wednesday versus Miami, so Tomlin could be a candidate to pitch that day if he's not needed in relief Monday or Tuesday.... See More ... Braves' Josh Tomlin: Gives up five runs Friday
Tomlin allowed five runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out two over four innings in Friday's loss to the Nationals. He didn't factor into the decision.
Tomlin was roughed up early against the Nationals as he allowed three runs in the first inning before giving up two more in the third. However, a strong offensive showing from Atlanta allowed him to settle for the no-decision. With Max Fried (back) and Cole Hamels (triceps) expected to return soon, it's unclear when Tomlin could make another start.... See More ... See Less
Braves' Josh Tomlin: Picks up win Sunday
Tomlin (2-2) allowed one run on three hits and no walks while striking out two over six innings to earn the win Sunday against the Nationals.
Tomlin had been charged with losses in both of his past two outings, but he received an extra day of rest prior to Sunday's start. He responded with his longest appearance of the season, and he only allowed three baserunners over the first six innings of the contest. The right-hander now has a 3.77 ERA and 26:6 K:BB over 28.2 innings this year. His next start should be on the road Friday against the Nationals.... See More ... See Less

Tomlin has a 4.37 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 24:6 K:BB over 22.2 innings, and he lines up to pitch against the Nationals next weekend.... See More ... See Less
