David Holmberg: Headed to American Association
Holmberg signed a contract with the Milwaukee Milkmen of the American Association on Wednesday, Brandon Warne of Access Twins reports.
Holmberg last pitched in the minors in 2018, when he recorded a 5.21 ERA and 1.55 WHIP over 107 innings during 22 appearances (18 starts) with Triple-A Albuquerque. The 29-year-old will now head to the American Association for the 2021 campaign.

Rockies' David Holmberg: Signs with Rockies
Holmberg joined the Rockies on a minor-league deal Monday, Chris Cotillo of SB Nation reports.
Holmberg spent the spring with the Orioles but failed to make the team and was released. The 26-year-old lefty has thrown 119.2 innings in the majors without much success. He has a 5.49 ERA and an even worse 7.38 FIP. He's walked more batters (69) than he struck out (66). Even if he ends up in Colorado later this season, he's very unlikely to be much of a fantasy asset.

Holmberg was released by the Orioles on Thursday, Chris Cotillo of SB Nation reports.
Holmberg will now look to latch on elsewhere after failing to establish himself in the Orioles' organization. The 26-year-old appeared in 37 games for the White Sox in 2017 (seven starts), compiling a 4.68 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 33:34 K:BB across 57.2 innings.

Orioles' David Holmberg: Signs minor-league deal with Orioles
Holmberg joined the Orioles on a minor-league contract, Jon Meoli of The Baltimore Sun reports.
The deal does not include an invitation to big-league camp. The 26-year-old lefty made seven starts for the White Sox in 2017 and appeared a further 30 times out of the bullpen. He finished with a 4.68 ERA and an ugly 6.80 FIP, both of which beat his career numbers (5.49 ERA, 7.38 FIP). He's walked more batters (69) than he's struck out (66) in his major-league career. Even on a team with a weak pitching staff, Holmberg looks unlikely to claim a big-league job.

David Holmberg: Becomes free agent
Holmberg was outrighted by the White Sox on Wednesday.
With Holmberg ousted from the 40-man roster, he's now free to explore his options as a minor-league free agent. Holmberg struggled during his time with Chicago this season, posting a 4.68 ERA and 1.68 WHIP over 57.2 innings, and the peripherals suggest things could have been a lot worse (6.80 FIP).

White Sox's David Holmberg: Headed back to bullpen
Holmberg won't make his next scheduled start Sunday against the Giants and is expected to move to the bullpen at least temporarily, James Fegan of The Athletic Chicago reports.
White Sox manager Rick Renteria suggested that Fulmer would need to pitch well Sunday to earn future starts over the final month of the season, so if the right-hander falters, Holmberg or Dylan Covey could reenter the rotation. Holmberg had replaced the since-released Derek Holland in the rotation earlier this week, giving up six runs on six hits and four walks over three innings to take a loss Tuesday against the Indians.

White Sox's David Holmberg: Hit hard, chased early
Holmberg (2-4) allowed six runs on six hits and four walks while striking out two over three innings in Tuesday's 9-4 loss to the Indians.
Four of the six hits Holmberg allowed went for extra bases, including three home runs. The left-hander allowed runs in each inning pitched and that was enough for manager Rick Renteria, who went to his bullpen early. Holmberg is tentatively scheduled to start Sunday at home against the Giants, but given Tuesday's results, it's fair to wonder if he'll continue forward in the rotation. Carson Fulmer, a minor-league starter that pitched 2.2 scoreless innings Tuesday, could get the next opportunity.

White Sox's David Holmberg: Confirmed for Tuesday start
Manager Rick Renteria confirmed Holmberg will start Tuesday's game against the Rays.
Holmberg will enter the rotation in place of Derek Holland, who was sent to the bullpen after posting an 8.86 ERA and 2.13 WHIP in 11 second-half starts (42.2 innings). The 26-year-old doesn't carry much fantasy appeal in his new role, seeing as he owns an unsightly 6.00 ERA and 43:45 K:BB through 18 big-league starts (81 innings).

Holmberg is expected to start Tuesday's game against the Rays, Scot Gregor of the Chicago Daily Herald reports.
Holmberg looks to be in line to enter the rotation in place of Derek Holland, who has posted an 8.86 ERA and 2.13 WHIP over 42.2 innings in his 11 second-half starts. The bar is low for Holmberg to offer improved production at the back end of the rotation, but his own body of work as a starter leaves much to be desired. In his 18 career big-league starts, Holmberg has tallied a 6.00 ERA and a 4.7 K/9 rate.

White Sox's David Holmberg: Recalled from Triple-A
Holmberg was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte on Friday.
The 26-year-old southpaw has gone back and forth between Triple-A and the majors this season, posting a 2.78 ERA in 32.1 innings at Triple-A and a 3.55 ERA in 50.2 innings in the big leagues. He has worked as a starter and reliever this year, but will likely spend most of September pitching out of the bullpen.

Holmberg was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte on Friday.
Holmberg, who has been with the White Sox since May, has been an oft-used reliever since being bumped out of the starting rotation, posting a 5.45 ERA over his last 18 appearances. Nonetheless, he serves as the roster casualty with Reynaldo Lopez being recalled ahead of his White Sox debut Friday. Holmberg will return to Triple-A for now, where he posted a 1.76 ERA over 15.1 innings earlier this season before being brought up.

With the return of Carlos Rodon from the DL (biceps), Holmberg's role as a starter will end for the time being. In his most recent start Monday, he gave up two earned runs off five hits and four walks, while striking out just two and taking the loss against the Yankees. The 25-year-old has been a solid contributor for the White Sox this year, and will look to have a high-leverage role out of the bullpen if he can reign in his command (22:15 K:BB).

While this was a tough result for Holmberg, the lefty still sports a respectable 2.92 ERA and 1.14 WHIP through his six starts in the majors this season. However, with a 5.4 K/9 and 4.65 FIP, expectations for him should probably remain in check. Another high-powered offense is on deck for Holmberg, as his next start projects to come against Texas at Chicago's hitter-friendly home park, Guaranteed Rate Field.

Holmberg had shown some promise over his first 27.1 innings spanning 12 appearances as a swingman, but things didn't go nearly so well this time. Once considered a fairly promising starter in the minors, he's seen his career stagnate in recent seasons, and with a modest 20:11 K:BB this year. Holmberg may not be able to sustain his solid early numbers.

Holmberg will start Wednesday in place of Miguel Gonzalez (shoulder), Colleen Kane of the Chicago Tribune reports.
With James Shields returning after a lengthy stay on the disabled list, Holmberg was heading back to the bullpen, but he got a reprieve from long relief when the White Sox sent Gonzalez to the disabled list. The left-hander will make at least one more start against the Twins in Minnesota. Gonzalez was able to throw out to 60 feet Sunday after receiving a cortisone shot, so the White Sox are hopeful his absence won't be a prolonged one.

Holmberg continues to provide valuable innings for the White Sox -- he now sits with a 2.63 ERA and 0.88 WHIP through 27.1 frames. However, the team has been mindful to limit his exposure to opposing lineups during his starts, and the short hook has cost him chances at wins. With James Shields (shoulder) returning Sunday, it seems likely Holmberg will transition back to the bullpen.

Holmberg allowed one run on three hits and two walks across 3.1 innings in a no-decision Sunday against the Tigers. He struck out one.
Holmberg pitched well in his second straight turn in the rotation, allowing a solo home run to J.D. Martinez for the only run on his ledger shortly before his removal in the fourth inning. He threw 41 of his 74 pitches for strikes and seems to have a firm cap of around 75 pitches as a starter, having previously been pulled with 72 under his belt Monday against the Red Sox. Holmberg is not currently scheduled to make another start, but he could very well be asked to do so again next week due to the state of the club's rotation.
