Marlins' Alex Wimmers: Signs NRI deal with Marlins
Wimmers agreed to a minor-league deal with Miami on Friday which includes an invitation to spring training, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.
Wimmers appeared in six big-league games for the Twins during this past season, posting a 4.91 ERA and 2.18 WHIP with a 7:8 K:BB over 7.1 innings of relief work. Despite those shaky numbers, he performed much better at the Triple-A level, where he will likely begin the 2018 season. The 29-year-old right-hander will need to prove that he can keep his control in check in order to earn any sort of shot with Miami in the future.

Twins' Alex Wimmers: Outrighted to Triple-A
Wimmers cleared waivers and was assigned outright to Triple-A Rochester on Tuesday, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
Wimmers was designated for assignment Friday after allowing four earned runs over 7.1 innings of relief with the Twins this season. No other teams showed interest in the 28-year-old, so he'll look to get into form with Rochester moving forward.

The right-hander absorbed a 4.91 ERA in 7.1 innings with Minnesota this year and fared marginally better with a 3.94 in 16 innings for Triple-A Rochester. Wimmers may stick around as a minor-league depth piece, though the 28-year-old still may find a more useful role with a pitching-needy organization.

Wimmers has been sent down to Triple-A Rochester, Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Wimmers allowed a run on three hits and two walks over 1.1 innings in Monday's brutal loss to the Mariners, bumping his ERA up to 4.76. With the Twins' bullpen spent after having to throw a combined 5.1 innings Monday night, Wimmers was the casualty. The club will announce a corresponding move Tuesday.

Wimmers has been recalled from Triple-A Rochester, Phil Miller of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Wimmers struggled at the start of the season with a 5.73 ERA with a 9:7 K:BB in his first 11 innings. However, he's given up just two runs in nine innings in May with a 7:3 K:BB. He'll get a shot at middle relief as the Twins look for answers with a beleaguered bullpen.

Wimmers has a 3.00 ERA with seven strikeouts in six innings this spring. He's being considered for a final spot in the bullpen, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
Wimmers moved to the bullpen last season and had a career revival with a 9.1 K/9 and 3.62 ERA at Triple-A. However, he posted just a a 4.15 ERA and 7.3 K/9 when called up to the majors in September. He also walked too many batters (4.4 BB/9 at Triple-A), which he'll need to reduce since he doesn't have a dominating fastball (91.6 mph average in the majors last season). Wimmers is still likely to begin the season in Triple-A despite his strong spring.

The former first-round draft pick had a brief cup of coffee with the Twins in September, but could only muster a 4.15 ERA and a 7.3 K/9 out of the Minnesota bullpen. Wimmers is on the right side of 30, but his lack of control and finishing strikeout ability could relegate him to organizational depth going forward.

The Twins recalled Wimmers from Triple-A Rochester on Friday, MLB.com's Rhett Bollinger reports.
The 2010 first-round pick took a rocky road to the majors, but he finally earned his first call-up by posting a 3.62 ERA and striking out 50 batters over 49.2 innings in 39 appearances with Rochester this season. He was working as a closer with Rochester but figures to open in middle relief with the Twins.

Twins' Alex Wimmers: Settling in as reliever at Triple-A
Wimmers has a 4.58 ERA and 15:8 K:BB in 17.2 innings since being promoted to Triple-A Rochester.
The first-round pick by the Twins in 2010 struggled as a starter, but was moved to the bullpen in the second half of last season with some success. While he has a good strikeout rate, high walk totals have always been a problem. Given Minnesota's poor bullpen this season, it wouldn't be a shock to see him get a shot in the majors if he can improve his control.
