Blue Jays' George Springer: Resumes hitting off tee

Springer (toe) resumed hitting off a tee Wednesday, Mitch Bannon of The Athletic reports.
"Looked pretty normal, which is good," manager John Schneider said Thursday. "He's feeling better." Springer will likely not need a rehab assignment, and the toe he fractured will just be "annoying" for a couple weeks, according to Hazel Mae of Sportsnet. The Blue Jays are aiming for Springer to return for their next homestand, which begins Friday, April 24 against the Guardians.

The Blue Jays placed Springer (toe) on the 10-day injured list Sunday.
Springer fractured his left big toe Saturday when he fouled a ball off his foot, and though the nature of the injury would imply a longer absence, manager John Schneider indicated that the four-time All-Star could return in close to the minimum amount of time, per Keegan Matheson of MLB.com. The Blue Jays called up Eloy Jimenez from Triple-A Buffalo to take Springer's spot on the roster, and he'll enter the lineup at designated hitter Sunday. Along with Jimenez, Toronto could opt to rotate a number of players through the DH spot while Springer is shelved, although the team's depth is already being tested with Addison Barger (ankles) and Alejandro Kirk (thumb) also sidelined.

Springer was removed from Saturday's game against the Twins with a left big toe fracture.
Springer fouled a ball off his foot in the third inning before being removed in the sixth, and imaging determined afterward that he suffered a fracture. It's unclear how long the 36-year-old outfielder will be out, but he's a safe bet to require a trip to the injured list.

His blast to left field off Tomoyuki Sugano in the third inning got Toronto on the board. Springer has left the yard in back-to-back games, and while he's only batting .158 (3-for-19) through four games, all three hits have gone for extra bases.

The veteran slugger took Luis Morales deep to lead off the game for the Jays. It was Springer's first long ball of the season, and while he's gone 2-for-14 with four strikeouts through three games, both hits have gone for extra bases as he works to shake off a sluggish spring.

The 36-year-old is batting just .167 (3-for-18) so far this spring in limited action with zero extra-base hits and a 5:3 BB:K. Springer was one of the biggest surprises for the Blue Jays last season during their run to an AL pennant, with his 32 homers and .959 OPS in 140 games being his highest marks since 2019, but regression is very likely in 2026.
