  • Jeff Ferrell: Parts ways with Orioles

Ferrell was released by the Orioles on Thursday, Chris Cotillo of SB Nation reports.

The Orioles decided to part ways with Ferrell after the 27-year-old struggled to an 11.25 ERA and 2.25 WHIP across four spring appearances. Ferrell split time between the upper minors and the majors last season, notching an impressive 2.70 ERA across 46.2 innings with Triple-A Toledo but struggling to a 6.75 ERA across 9.1 big-league frames.

  • Orioles' Jeff Ferrell: Receives invitation to spring training

Ferrell will attend the Orioles' spring training as a non-roster invitee.

Ferrell pitched 9.1 innings over 11 games in the majors with the Tigers last season. Batters hit him with ease, as he gave up seven runs on five walks and 17 hits in that short time. Unfortunately, he didn't have the chance to improve, as a head injury cut his season short. Ferrell will look to get back on track at spring training with Baltimore.

  • Tigers' Jeff Ferrell: Tosses bullpen session

Ferrell (concussion) threw a bullpen session Tuesday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.

Ferrell was placed in concussion protocol on Sept. 19, but he's moving in the right direction in his recovery -- he also threw Saturday. The 26-year-old has only thrown 9.1 innings in 2017, and would likely be in a mop-up role if he does return before the end of the year.

  • Tigers' Jeff Ferrell: Has resumed throwing

Ferrell (concussion) threw Saturday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.

In addition to Saturday's workout, Ferrell threw Friday as well. While it's a step in the right direction that he's been able to throw, specific details regarding the intensity of his recent workouts are unknown. Ferrell has been under concussion protocol since Sept. 19, but the team is still entertaining the possibility of him pitching again before the season ends.

  • Tigers' Jeff Ferrell: Hit in head by line drive

Ferrell was forced to leave Monday's game after he was struck in the head by a line drive, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.

Ferrell was able to stay standing after taking the blow, somehow, but it would still be a surprise if he didn't suffer a concussion. The line drive off the bat of Ryon Healy had a 102.6 mph exit velocity, so it's a good bet that Ferrell won't be able to make his next start. Expect the club to monitor Ferrell's status overnight and provide updates as the week progresses.

  • Tigers' Jeff Ferrell: CT scan confirms no fracture

Ferrell, who was hit in the head by a line drive in Monday's game, underwent a CT scan which confirmed that he did not suffer a fracture, Emily Waldon of The Athletic Detroit reports.

This is excellent news for Ferrell, who is still unlikely to return anytime soon, but appears to have avoided an extremely serious injury. It's possible he will be in the concussion protocol for a while, and it would not be surprising if he did not return this season.

The 26-year-old will likely be slated for duties in the middle innings early on before potentially working his way into the Tigers' setup ranks.
