  • Cody Reed: Released by Arizona

Reed was released by the Diamondbacks on Friday, JJ Cooper of Baseball America reports.

Reed was a lower-level sleeper from 2014 through 2016, but arm injuries struck and he never quite regained his prior form. He reached High-A in 2016 but never made it further than that level.

  • Diamondbacks' Cody Reed: Strikes out 10 in Sunday's start

Reed covered seven innings for High-A Visalia on Sunday, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk while striking out 10 batters.

Since being promoted from Low-A Kane County in late May, Reed's production has taken a slight step back with Visalia, but his 3.53 ERA and 82:29 K:BB over 81.2 innings are more than respectable, considering the hitter-friendly confines of the California League. The 21-year-old lefty likely still remains a year or two away from reaching the big leagues, but his excellent size (6-foo-3, 245 pounds) and strikeout stuff give him the upside of a middle-of-the-rotation starter for the Diamondbacks down the road.

  • Diamondbacks' Cody Reed: Tosses six shutout innings for High-A club

Reed fanned six batters and gave up an unearned run over six innings for High-A Visalia on Sunday. He yielded four hits and walked three batters in the start.

Reed had a few rough outings during his first month with Visalia after being promoted from Low-A Kane County in late May, but he's been on fire over his last three starts. He's given up only three runs (one earned) in 17 innings during that span while accruing 17 strikeouts and a 1.06 WHIP. The production is especially impressive when considering the hitter-friendly venues that dot the California League, so those tracking Reed in dynasty formats shouldn't be too discouraged if his ERA backslides a bit in his subsequent appearances.

  • Diamondbacks' Cody Reed: Delivers complete game for Low-A club

Reed tossed a complete-game three-hit shutout Thursday for Low-A Kane County, striking out nine batters and walking one.

After struggling upon moving up to High-A Visalia in 2016, Reed opened the season a rung lower on the minor-league level and his continued his mastery of the Midwest League. Reed has turned in a 1.08 ERA and 47:9 K:BB over 41.2 innings for Kane County while holding opponents to a .169 batting average. The 20-year-old should get another chance to prove himself in the California League by midseason.

  • Diamondbacks' Cody Reed: Missing bats at Low-A

Reed has a 1.00 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 11:5 K:BB in two starts for Low-A Kane County.

He missed the final seven weeks of the 2016 season with an undisclosed injury, but is back to game action this year. He really struggled after a promotion to High-A last season, but that could have been related to whatever injury ended his season. If he continues to miss bats at a high rate in Low-A, he should once again be tested with a promotion to High-A.
