Dodgers' Gavin Lux: On track to be primary shortstop

Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes said Wednesday that Lux (knee) appears on track to be the team's primary shortstop in 2024, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports.
Lux was expected to take over the position in 2023 before he blew out both the ACL and LCL in his right knee during an early spring training game. The 25-year-old began a running program in late July and continues to make steady progress within the recovery process, per Gomes. He should be back to full health when camp opens in February.

Lux (knee) said Saturday that he'll be able to start running on the field at the end of next week and that he could start hitting off a tee in early August, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.
Lux is recovering from a torn ACL and LCL suffered early in spring training. He began running on a treadmill in late June and is now nearing on-field running. Though this is a sign that he's making good progress, Lux is not expected to return this season. However, there's a strong chance that he'll be fully recovered by spring training next year.

Lux (knee) posted a video Tuesday on his personal Instagram account featuring him running on a treadmill.
Lux's video confirms that he's begun a running program about three and a half months after he underwent surgery to repair ACL and LCL tears in his right knee. The Dodgers still don't appear to be counting on Lux returning from the 60-day injured list at any point this season, but if he steers clear of any setbacks while ramping up the intensity of his running over the next several months, he could enter spring training with a clean bill of health.

Lux is progressing more quickly than anticipated in his recovery from March 8 surgery to repair the ACL and LCL tears in his right knee, though the expectation remains that he will not appear in a game for the Dodgers this season. Miguel Rojas continues to serve as the primary shortstop in Los Angeles.

Though the news that he could be cleared to begin running in July is a positive sign of progress, there's been no indication that the Dodgers expect Lux to return this season.

Lux suffered both injuries when he took an awkward step while running the bases in a Cactus League game on Feb. 27. He'll spend the entire 2023 season in recovery mode, spoiling what many thought might be a breakout campaign for the 25-year-old. Miguel Rojas is expected to open as the primary shortstop for the Dodgers, with Chris Taylor also getting some reps there.
Lux's right knee injury is "bad," a source told Buster Olney of ESPN. The injury is expected to keep the infielder sidelined for a long time.
The Dodgers have yet to reveal the results of the MRI performed on Lux's knee, but it doesn't sound like the news will be good. Lux injured his knee during Cactus League play Monday on a slide into third base and had to be carted off the field. We should find out more about the 25-year-old later Tuesday. Miguel Rojas figures to take over at shortstop while Lux is on the shelf.

There was some belief that Lux had torn his LCL, but imaging revealed just a sprain. Unfortunately, the torn ACL suffered by the 25-year-old will keep Lux out for all of the 2023 season, as he will undergo surgery performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache on March 7 in Los Angeles. Miguel Rojas and Chris Taylor are expected to get the majority of the reps at shortstop with Lux out.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts revealed Tuesday that Lux has been diagnosed with a torn ACL in his right knee and is likely out for the season, Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times reports.
The 25-year-old was set to take over as the Dodgers' everyday shortstop in 2023, but he won't get the opportunity to play a single regular-season game after his leg gave out as he was running the bases in a Cactus League game Monday against the Padres. He also has some damage to his right LCL and will require a full surgical repair, which is already scheduled for March 7 in Los Angeles, per Harris. Miguel Rojas, acquired from the Marlins in January, currently looks like the best bet to fill the vacancy at shortstop for the reigning NL West champs. Utility man Chris Taylor could also see some action at the position.
