  • Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Raking in Double-A

Mayer has hit safely in the first seven games for Double-A Portland. He's slashing .357/.387/.500 with one home run, five RBI, two steals and seven runs scored.

Mayer is healthy after a 2023 season ended early due to a shoulder injury that he said he was feeling long before he was shut down in August. It's reasonably expected that the highly regarded prospect will make his MLB debut in 2025, but this season may not be out of the question. Given the season-ending injury to Trevor Story (shoulder), it's not hard to envision Mayer getting the call later in 2024.

  • Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Shoulder no longer an issue

Mayer said Wednesday that he's now "ready to go" after his 2023 season ended due to a left shoulder injury, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.

Mayer wound up missing the last month of the minor-league season due to left shoulder inflammation, an injury which he admitted Wednesday had been bothering him for a while before he was shut down. It could be at least partly to blame for why the 21-year-old slashed just .189/.254/.355 following a midseason promotion to Double-A Portland. Mayer is likely headed back to Portland to start 2024 as he looks to regain his prospect momentum.

  • Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Shut down with shoulder injury

Mayer (shoulder) has been shut down for the remainder of the season at Double-A Portland, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.

Mayer has missed the last month of action with left shoulder inflammation. Red Sox director of player development Brian Abraham said of Mayer on Wednesday that the team is "very pleased with the progress he has made so far," but the goal at this point is the "strengthening of his shoulder, so he can have a full, normal offseason." Mayer batted .290/.366/.524 for High-A Greenville but slashed just .189/.254/.355 following a midseason promotion to Portland. It was an aggressive assignment given that he won't turn 21 until December. The young shortstop is one of the organization's top prospects.

  • Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Lands on IL

Mayer was placed on the 7-day injured list by Double-A Portland on Saturday with left shoulder inflammation, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. The move is retroactive to Aug. 3, so he can return as soon as Thursday.

Mayer is 1-for-21 with 12 strikeouts over the last five games and has struggled overall since his promotion to Portland. The 20-year-old shortstop, considered one of the organization's top prospects, is slashing .189/.254/.355 over 43 games in Double-A.

  • Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Breaks through at Double-A

Mayer went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored for Double-A Portland on Sunday.

Mayer can let out a big sigh of relief, as he connected for his first hits against Double-A pitching. After he was promoted from High-A Greenville last week, Boston's top prospect was hitless in his first 16 at-bats for the Sea Dogs. If the common-held belief that making the jump from High-A to Double-A is the most difficult, it may be more challenging for a 20-year-old like Mayer.

  • Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Heading to Double-A

Mayer was promoted to Double-A Portland on Sunday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.

Mayer was on a tear at High-A Greenville to begin the 2023 campaign, slashing .291/.365/.532 with seven home runs, 33 RBI, 23 runs and four steals over 34 games. Boston's top prospect will now have a chance to prove himself at the Double-A level.

  • Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: On tear in May

Mayer went 4-for-4 with two doubles, a home run, two RBI and two additional runs scored for High-A Greenville on Sunday.

Mayer is on a tear for the month of May in the South Atlantic League, going 16-for-31 with nine extra-base hits, 12 RBI and eight runs scored while leading all Sally League hitters in OPS (1.516). Boston's top prospect and ranked seventh in MLB, Mayer could be on his way to Double-A Portland shortly.

  • Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Gets timing down

Mayer went 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBI in Saturday's game for High-A Greenville.

Mayer had scuffled out of the gate with just two hits over his first 20 at-bats before breaking out Saturday. He told Brendan Samson of MLB.com that he'd been late on swings early in the season but got his timing down Saturday. "I just made sure today that I got my foot down early, started a little earlier and got a good pitch to hit and I was able to do that today," Mayer said. The 20-year-old shortstop prospect slashed .280/.399/.489 with 13 home runs and 17 steals over 91 combined games between Single-A Salem and Greenville in 2022.
