Pirates' Liover Peguero: Optioned to Indianapolis
The Pirates optioned Peguero to Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday.
Peguero entered spring camp as the Pirates' likely Opening Day second baseman, but he will instead head to the minors after going 7-for-26 with three RBI. With the 23-year-old in Triple-A, Jared Triolo figures to take over at second base, but Peguero could reclaim his spot if he gets off to a fast start in Indianapolis.

Pirates' Liover Peguero: Returns to lineup
Peguero (illness) is starting at second base in Thursday's spring game against Toronto.
Peguero has been out of action since March 13 due to a virus, but his illness appears to have subsided ahead of Thursday's contest. Peguero went 7-for-24 with a homer and three RBI during Grapefruit League play before getting sick, and he remains the favorite to start at second base on Opening Day.

Pirates' Liover Peguero: Recovering from virus
Pirates manager Derek Shelton said Monday that Peguero hasn't been featured in the Grapefruit League lineup since last Wednesday while he recovers from a virus, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
A bug seems to be making its way around the Pirates' spring facility in Bradenton, Fla., as Shelton also noted that reliever Colin Holderman hasn't been available since last Tuesday due to an illness. Peguero had already compiled 24 at-bats in Grapefruit League action before his recent absence, so assuming he's able to get back in action before the Pirates' spring schedule comes to a close March 25, his availability for Opening Day shouldn't be in question. The 23-year-old is likely to begin the season as the Pirates' everyday second baseman.

Pirates' Liover Peguero: Favorite for second base job
Peguero is the favorite to start at second base for the Pirates entering spring training, Jake Crouse of MLB.com reports.
Peguero was promoted to the majors in mid-July and stuck with the team through the close of the 2023 season. He made 33 starts at second base and 39 at shortstop, though Oneil Cruz will be back to handle the latter position in 2024. Peguero will still have to battle with Jared Triolo and Nick Gonzales for playing time at the keystone, but he arguably has the highest long-term upside of the group. That could be enough to convince the Pirates to give him a long look to begin the season, even after he struck out at a 28.1 percent clip with a 64 wRC+ in his first significant taste of the majors.

Peguero secured his sixth stolen base of the season when he swiped second in the fourth inning. The rookie infielder has managed 27 steals in 2023, including 21 during two minor-leagues stops prior to his promotion. Peguero's performance this season has been mediocre outside of the speed as he is slashing .230/.271/.364 over his first 56 big-league games.

The rookie is slashing .252/.301/.437 with seven homers, 22 RBI, 19 runs scored and four stolen bases over 42 contests this season. Peguero will likely continue to split time between second base and shortstop, with Alika Williams and Vinny Capra also mixing in on occasion.

Peguero went 2-for-5 with a pair of base hits in Saturday's 7-6 win over the Cardinals.

Pirates' Liover Peguero: Not in lineup Thursday
Peguero is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Cubs.

Pirates' Liover Peguero: Swipes fourth bag
Peguero went 2-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored Wednesday against the Cardinals.
Peguero has experienced some of the ups and downs expected of rookies, as he entered Wednesday's game with only two hits across his prior 17 at-bats. He broke out of that slump with the seventh multi-hit performance in 28 big-league games so far this season. Peguero has seen the majority of his playing time at second base, and that role should be more secure moving forward with Oneil Cruz's (ankle) return in doubt.

Pirates' Liover Peguero: On bench Tuesday
Peguero is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Cardinals.
Peguero went 1-for-3 with two walks and two RBI in Monday's series-opening rout of St. Louis, but he'll grab some pine Tuesday as Alika Williams covers shortstop and Ji Hwan Bae handles second base.

He's also hit safely in three straight, driving in three runs over that stretch.

Pirates' Liover Peguero: Moves to bench Wednesday
Peguero is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against Atlanta.
Since being called up from Triple-A Indianapolis shortly after the All-Star break, Peguero has posted a respectable .749 OPS, but he hasn't completely broken free of a timeshare in the middle infield. He'll take a seat Wednesday for the second time in six games Wednesday while Jared Triolo replaces him at second base.

Pirates' Liover Peguero: Posts first big-league steal
Peguero went 1-for-4 with a run and a stolen base Saturday in an extra-inning loss to Milwaukee.
Peguero was key in helping the Pirates take a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning, as he singled with two outs, stole second base and came around to score on a Jason Delay double. The theft was Peguero's first (and his first attempt) in 14 games as a major leaguer. There may be many more stolen bases to come, as Peguero ranks in the 97th percentile in sprint speed and swiped over 20 bags in each of his past three seasons in the minors.
