Top John Gil News

  • Braves' John Gil: Shining at High-A

Gil went 2-for-5 with two solo home runs and a third run scored for High-A Rome on Sunday.

The shortstop prospect will turn 20 years old Thursday, but Gil hasn't looked anything like an overmatched teenager in his first look at High-A pitching. Through 31 games this season, he's slashing .305/.403/.508 with six homers, 20 steals in 23 attempts, and an impressive 21:26 BB:K. Atlanta seems likely to challenge him with a promotion to Double-A fairly soon, and Gil should rocket up prospect lists this summer if he keeps flashing five-category upside.

  • Braves' John Gil: Goes yard for second straight day

Gil went 1-for-2 with a walk and a solo home run in Sunday's split-squad game against the Twins.

Getting the start at DH, Gil homered for the second straight day when he crushed a 94.5 mph fastball from Eric Orze over the left-field fence. Per Ken Sugiura of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the ball left Gil's bat at 109.7 mph. The 19-year-old shortstop's bat may be catching up to his glove and legs, a process that appeared to start last season when he slashed .328/.425/.568 over 31 games after the All-Star break for Single-A Augusta before a late cup of coffee with Double-A Columbus. Gil is showing early signs of a full breakout as a prospect in 2026.

  • Braves' John Gil: Making good impression in camp

Gil has drawn comparisons to former Atlanta shortstop Rafael Furcal with his energy and speed early in camp, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.

Furcal was the 2000 NL Rookie of the Year and a three-time All-Star over a 14-year big-league career, but while he was generously listed at 5-foot-8 during his playing days, Gil stands 6-foot-1 and is still growing into his athletic frame. The 19-year-old began to tap into his upside at the plate last year at Single-A Augusta, slashing .258/.352/.378 with seven homers and 50 steals in 64 attempts over 100 games. Another step forward in 2026 could see Gil soar up the ladder and have him knocking on the door of a big-league debut.
