  • Earl Mitchell: Returns to retirement

Mitchell announced his decision to retire from the NFL after San Francisco's loss to the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.

Mitchell previously retired in November of 2019, but he returned to the field to contribute during the 49ers' postseason run. The 10-year veteran notched one assisted tackle and a half-sack during the team's Super Bowl loss, and he's now content to hang up the cleats for a final time. "I'm done. I'm grateful that I got that opportunity to come back," Mitchell said, "but I think that was a good way to finish my career.

He will rejoin his previous team for the playoffs in order to bolster their interior defensive line.

The Seahawks signed Mitchell to a contract Wednesday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.

The 49ers didn't exercise their team option on Mitchell, making him a free agent, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Reports first leaked shortly after the season indicating the 49ers didn't plan to pick up Mitchell's option, but the transaction didn't become official until the start of the new league year. • 49ers' Earl Mitchell: Won't get contract option

The 49ers will decline Mitchell's team option for the 2019 and 2020 seasons, allowing him to become a free agent in March, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

A run-stuffing tackle with just 6.5 sacks in 130 career games, Mitchell garnered 12 starts in his 14 appearances in 2018. The 31-year-old should draw some interest as an unrestricted free agent, though he'll likely have to settle for a reduction in both salary and role.

  • 49ers' Earl Mitchell: Given day off from practice

Mitchell (rest) did not practice Saturday, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

The 49ers held Mitchell out of Saturday's organized activities to provide the veteran with added rest. There doesn't appear to be anything serious here, just a strategic rest day. Mitchell should be ready to go for the start of next week's team drills.

  • 49ers' Earl Mitchell: Logs career-high 625 defensive snaps

Mitchell recorded 33 tackles (19 solo) to go along with a sack in 16 games in 2017.

Fresh off inking a four-year contract last offseason, the veteran defensive tackle surpassed his previous career high in snaps that he set with Miami back in 2014. Primarily a run-stuffer, Mitchell didn't post totals that would appeal to IDP owners. His heavy usage indicates that the 49ers will likely feel comfortable deploying the 30-year-old in a similar early-down role next season.
