  • Trey Flowers: Officially done in Detroit

The Lions released Flowers (undisclosed) on Thursday.

Detroit cut Flowers with a failed physical designation, per the NFL's official transaction report. The 28-year-old pass rusher has logged back-to-back seasons in which he was limited to seven games due to injuries, with his 2021 campaign having been defined by a knee issue. Parting ways with Flowers saves the Lions over $10 million against the cap, but once back to full health he should draw interest from other organizations around the league.

  • Lions' Trey Flowers: Set to be released

The Lions plan to release Flowers (knee) in the coming days, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Per the report, the looming move is in line to occur on the first day of the 2022 league year next week. Injuries have limited Flowers to seven games in each of the last two seasons, but when healthy the 28-year-old -- who logged 24 tackles and 1.5 sacks last year -- can provide utility as a pass rusher.

  • Lions' Trey Flowers: GM noncommittal about future

General manager Brad Holmes was noncommittal about Flowers' (knee) future in the organization during Tuesday's press conference, Justin Rogers of The Detroit News reports.

Flowers has largely disappointed in Detroit since landing a five-year, $90 million contract under the Lions' previous regime in 2019. While injuries have played a large role in his lack of production, Detroit could save more than $10 million against the salary cap by letting Flowers go this offseason. He appeared in just seven games in 2021, finishing with 24 tackles, 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble.

  • Lions' Trey Flowers: Lands on IR

The Lions have placed Flowers (knee) on injured reserve.

Flowers has been sidelined since injuring his knee in Week 10 against the Steelers. It looks like the team is opting to err on the side of caution here by placing him on IR, which has presumably ended his season. Although, he still technically could return for the final two weeks if his health takes a positive turn.

  • Lions' Trey Flowers: Ruled out against Vikings

Flowers (knee) won't play in Sunday's game against the Vikings, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Flowers hasn't seen game action since hurting his knee in Week 10 against Pittsburgh. His inability to practice in any capacity throughout the week suggests Flowers will be fighting an uphill battle to make it back for Detroit's Week 14 matchup with the Broncos.
