Brandon Johnson: Returning to Pittsburgh
The Steelers are signing Johnson to their practice squad, Mike DeFabo of The Athletic reports.
Johnson most recently had been on Tampa Bay's practice squad before being cut Dec. 15. He's familiar with the Steelers organization, having been with the team last year and playing in three games, catching his only target for nine yards. Johnson's signing comes in the wake of DK Metcalf being suspended by the NFL for two games following an altercation with a fan this past Sunday. Johnson will provide organizational depth at wideout but isn't likely to garner a major role on game days.

Brandon Johnson: Out in Tampa Bay
Johnson was cut from the Buccaneers' practice squad Monday, Scott Smith of the team's official site reports.
The UCF product joined the Buccaneers' practice squad in late October, but the team has since decided to move in another direction. Johnson's last in-game action came with the Steelers in 2024, when he appeared in three contests and caught his only target for nine yards.

Johnson's addition to the Buccaneers' practice squad will give the team more depth at wide receiver after Mike Evans (collarbone) was placed on injured reserve Wednesday. Though he was waived by the Steelers on an injury settlement in late August after hurting his foot during the preseason, the 27-year-old wideout appears to have made a full recovery.

Johnson was with the Steelers in training camp before suffering a foot injury in the preseason finale against the Panthers. Johnson and the Steelers reached an injury settlement in late August, and the 27-year-old wideout has progressed enough in his recovery to work out with teams in an attempt to catch on with a practice squad. He appeared in three regular-season games for Pittsburgh in 2024 and logged one catch for nine yards.

The Steelers waived Johnson (foot) from injured reserve with an injury settlement Friday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Johnson suffered a foot injury during the Steelers' preseason finale against the Panthers. The injury settlement allows the 27-year-old wideout to sign with another team once he is fully healthy. Johnson has played in 23 regular-season games since entering the NFL in May of 2022 as an undrafted free agent.
