VIDEO: Bench-clearing AHL brawl results in 13 game misconducts

There are hockey brawls and there are hockey brawls on pink ice. From my experience, the pink ice seems to make things a little more intense.

That's probably because the brawl Saturday night between the Rockford IceHogs (Chicago's AHL affiliate) and the Grand Rapids Griffins (Detroit's AHL affiliate) is about the limit of my experiences of brawls on pink ice. Man, did this one get out of hand fast.

Seriously, Rockford goalie Carter Hutton showed greater speed getting down to the other end of the ice than a lot of forwards do on a breakaway. That's him going by the initial scrum in a pink streak. He looked like a deranged Easter bunny or a pink nightmare.

In total, 13 players were given game misconducts, and there were 230 penalty minutes when the game was all said and done, easily surpassing the 152 PIM earlier this season between Binghamton and Syracuse for most in an AHL game this season.

The fight actually occurred in the second period, so it's no wonder that with 13 players tossed from the game the Griffins went on to score a franchise-record 11 goals in an 11-6 win. There had to be some tired defenseive bodies on the ice in that third period.

Red Wings fans have to be wondering why their AHL team put up a better fight than their NHL team did on Saturday.

The wild fight and crazy game overshadowed the reason why the IceHogs were in pink in the first place and their ice was dyed: to raise money for breast cancer awareness.
