Klingberg's exit sounds precautionary for now, though the 31-year-old defenseman will be evaluated further Thursday. Klingberg is expected to be the Maple Leafs' quarterback on the first power-play unit as well as a top-four option this season. Given his importance to the team's offense, it's understandable that the Leafs will be cautious with him during the preseason slate.

Maple Leafs' John Klingberg: Slides onto top PP unit
Klingberg is practicing on the Leafs' top power-play unit, replacing Morgan Rielly, reports The Athletic.
There's no guarantee Klingberg will stick in this role, but he adds a different dimension to PP1 than the incumbent. Klingberg is a right-handed shot who is unafraid to fire the puck, while the left-shooting Rielly can be guilty of over-passing. Klingberg delivered 148 power-play points over his first eight NHL seasons, which were 11th-most at his position over that span. His 65 primary assists ranked 10th in the same period. The Leafs' top unit includes Mitchell Marner, Auston Matthews, William Nylander and John Tavares.

Maple Leafs' John Klingberg: Signs with Maple Leafs
Klingberg signed a one-year, $4.15 million contract with the Maple Leafs on Saturday, Chris Johnston of TSN reports.
Klingberg will bring the Maple Leafs some much needed offense from the blue line. The talented blueliner had 10 goals and 23 assists in 67 games split between Anaheim and Minnesota last season, including two goals and 10 points on the power play. Klingberg's offensive numbers should improve with the Maple Leafs given Toronto's talent up front.

Wild's John Klingberg: Two points in Game 4
Klingberg tallied a goal and an assist in Sunday's 3-2 loss to the Stars.
Klingberg got Minnesota on the board in the third period, beating Jake Oettinger with a wrist shot after corralling a deflected puck.
