Panthers' Aleksi Heponiemi: Plays hero in NHL debut
Heponiemi scored the overtime winner in Saturday's 3-2 victory over the Red Wings.
The 22-year-old couldn't have found a better way to mark his NHL debut, as Heponiemi tapped home a cross-crease feed from Anthony Duclair to beat Thomas Greiss. A second-round pick in 2017, Heponiemi had six goals and 14 points in 16 games for Modo in Sweden's second division before the NHL season began, and he has the skills to work his way off the fourth line if he continues to capitalize on his chances.... Panthers' Aleksi Heponiemi: Massive struggles in AHL
Heponiemi has just a single assist through his first seven games with AHL Springfield.
Heponiemi is just 20 years of age and playing in his first AHL campaign, so there's no need to slam the panic button here, but his play has been concerning. The lack of scoring aside, Heponiemi has just a single shot on goal in seven games, and that came in his most recent outing Saturday. In other words, the 2017 second-rounder (40th overall) went his first six games without registering a shot. The Finn is a former WHL Rookie of the Year who led Finland's Liiga in both assists (30) and points (46) last season, but he's also listed at 148 pounds and it's fair to wonder if Heponiemi is simply too slight to generate offense consistently on the smaller ice surfaces of North America.... Panthers' Aleksi Heponiemi: Headed overseas
Heponiemi will join up with Karpat of the Finnish league for the 2018-19 campaign, Matthew DeFranks of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
Rather than stay in the WHL, Heponiemi will take his talents abroad in order to further his development. The 19-year-old will likely face more difficult competition in a professional league than he would have by staying in juniors. Selected by the Panthers with the 40th overall pick of the 2017 NHL Draft, the center will likely stay in Finland for the bulk of the upcoming season.... See More ... See Less
