Avalanche's Bowen Byram: Practicing Thursday
Byram (upper body) was back at practice Thursday morning and could play in the evening's matchup versus Winnipeg, per Marc Moser of Altitude Sports 950.
While Byram was at Wednesday's optional skate, he remained on the bench throughout the practice. He left Tuesday's tilt against Anaheim after a big hit, courtesy of Max Jones. Byram has five goals and eight points in 25 games.

Avalanche's Bowen Byram: Attends practice on bench
Byram (upper body) was at Wednesday's optional skate but watched from the bench, Evan Rawal of Colorado Hockey Now reports.
Byram was removed from Tuesday's win over the Ducks after taking a hit from Max Jones. Colorado head coach Jared Bednar relayed that the defenseman was doing "good" as of Wednesday morning. "He caught a workout this morning, did some treatment, so hopefully he's good for tomorrow," the coach said. The hit initially raised fears of a concussion, but Bednar confirmed the injury was not related to the head following Tuesday's game.

Avalanche's Bowen Byram: Coach clarifies injury
Colorado head coach Jared Bednar confirmed the upper-body injury Byram sustained during Tuesday's win over the Ducks is not head related, Evan Rawal of Colorado Hockey Now reports.
That's good news for Byram, who has a concussion history. The Avalanche were already without Cale Makar (lower body), which leaves the team thin on the blue line. If neither Byram nor Makar are ready to go for Thursday's home game against the Jets, Sam Malinski, who played Tuesday, and hybrid forward/defenseman Kurtis MacDermid will likely be the fill-ins.

Avalanche's Bowen Byram: Departs with upper-body injury
Byram (upper body) won't return to Tuesday's game versus the Ducks, Corey Masisak of The Denver Post reports.
Byram was able to finish the second period, but won't return for the third, after taking a big hit from Max Jones, who also left the game injured after Logan O'Connor answered with a hit of his own. Byram's lengthy injury history, particularly with concussions and head injuries, makes this designation somewhat concerning until more details are known. If Byram can't play Thursday versus the Jets and Cale Makar (lower body) also can't go, the Avalanche will likely need to make a roster move.

Avalanche's Bowen Byram: Slow start
Coach Jared Bednar said Byram is "struggling" with the speed of game to start of the season, Evan Rawal of Colorado Hockey Now reports. "His reads, his timing's off, and that's why he's getting caught with some penalties," the coach said. "So, he's got to find a way to get himself going and respond, and we'll help in any way we can."
Byram recorded his first point of the season in Saturday's 6-4 win over the Hurricanes but was also whistled for two penalties. It was the third time in five games he's had multiple infractions. To start the second period, Bednar broke up the second pair of Byram and Samuel Girard, having each skate with a more stay at-home partner. Avalanche's Bowen Byram: Active Opening Night
Byram blocked four shots, delivered three hits and was assessed four penalty minutes over 20:29 of ice time in Wednesday's 5-2 win over Los Angeles.
Byram has missed a significant amount of games over his first two full seasons in the NHL, but the second-pair defenseman was willing to engage Opening Night. He's offensively capable for a team that needs secondary scoring. Given a full season's worth of good health, the 22-year-old has the skills to help in that area. Byram recorded 10 goals and 14 assists over 42 games last season.
