Boll officially announced his retirement after 11 NHL seasons Wednesday, The Athletic reports.
Boll spent nine seasons with the Blue Jackets and two more in Anaheim, averaging 118 PIM and roughly 94 hits per campaign. He'd only amass 66 points over 579 career games, but Boll always stood up for his teammates, and he really made a name for himself earlier in his career when almost every team had a designated enforcer. Nowadays, the NHL game is centered around speed and skill -- even for fourth-liners.

The Ducks needed room for goalie Reto Berra on the active roster, so Boll drew the short straw. He's a physical winger who's PIM-laden game would've fit better in the earlier part of this decade.

Boll averaged just 4:01 of ice time through the first six games of the season, so with Anaheim returning forwards to the lineup, it wasn't surprising to see him sit this contest out. He hasn't posted a double-digit point total since the 2010-11 campaign, so there aren't many fantasy settings where he moves the needle, and especially since Boll could have trouble slotting into the lineup going forward.

Boll will take the place of Nick Ritchie; both players are gritty, but it's Ritchie with the offensive skills, so this lineup change is a bit surprising to us. While Boll is far more experienced in terms of actual NHL service time, he's only appeared in three playoff games in nine years, and none since he was a member of the Blue Jackets in the 2013-14 season.

Boll has six PIM and five hits through his first four games, and when he's in the lineup, you can expect contributions in those categories.

Ducks' Jared Boll: Signs two-year deal with Ducks
Boll signed a two-year contract with the Ducks on Tuesday that will net him an average salary of $900,000 per year, Eric Stephens of the Orange County Register reports.
After spending the first nine years of his career with the Blue Jackets, Boll will get a change of scenery, as he"ll head to the Ducks for the 2016-17 campaign. However, the 30-year-old winger notched just three points this past year and hasn't recorded over six points in five straight seasons, meaning his fantasy value will remain severely restricted. Injury concerns only add to his poor fantasy outlook, so he may be a player to avoid unless he sees an increased role with his new team.

Jared Boll: Hits unconditional waivers
The Blue Jackets placed Boll on unconditional waivers Thursday with the intent to buy out his contract, Aaron Portzline of The Columbus Dispatch reports.
Columbus is clearing up cap space ahead of the July 1 signing period. Placing him on unconditional waivers is the first step in the process and if he clears, Boll will end up saving the team $1.33 million in 2016-17 while limiting the buyout cap hit to $566,666 in each of the next two seasons. Boll plays with an edge and really gets under the skin of opponents. However, he's a career fourth-liner who only averaged 6:39 of ice time in 30 games last season. Injuries are also a concern when it comes to the 30-year-old winger.

Boll has served his four-game suspension and is eligible to return to the lineup against the Hurricanes on Saturday.
Boll was given a heftier suspension under the league's repeat offender rules, so he will need to be on his best behavior to avoid increased penalties over the next 18 months. Unless you are in need of PIM, it would be wise to avoid the winger for your daily lineups as he has tallied a paltry two points on the year and is averaging 6:33 in ice time per game.

Boll was considered a repeat offender for the hit, which played a role in the length of the ban. In total, the winger will forfeit over $82,000 while sitting on the sidelines. In terms of fantasy value, Boll has offered very little this season -- the 29-year-old is averaging a meager 6:33 of ice time per game and has tallied only two points, 59 PIM and 49 hits.

Boll is slated to have a phone hearing with the NHL on Thursday pertaining to the check that he delivered on Philadelphia's Pierre-Edouard Bellemare on Tuesday, TSN.ca reports.
Per the Columbus Dispatch, Boll has been suspended by the league twice before, so there's a decent chance he'll face some sort of punishment here, but the fact that his hearing is of the phone variety suggests that any suspension Boll might draw will be less than five games. The 6-foot-3, 209-pound winger has just two points in 28 games for Columbus this season, but he has racked up 59 PIM in that span, including 15 on Tuesday.
