College football scores, rankings, highlights in Week 14: Oklahoma avoids disaster as CFP begins to take shape

With the 12-team College Football Playoff bracket set to be released in just over a week, Week 14 of the 2025 college football season served as one final impression for the committee. One of the biggest winners of the weekend was No. 8 Oklahoma. The Sooners secured a 17-13 comeback win over LSU to finish 10-2.

The Sooners will be idle until the bracket is official next weekend, but with the win over the Tigers, Oklahoma will likely make its return to the CFP for the first time under coach Brent Venables. Elsewhere in the SEC, No. 14 Vanderbilt also finished with a 10-win regular season after defeating No. 19 Tennessee 45-24 on the road.

While Oklahoma should feel safe ahead of next weekend's official reveal, No. 12 Miami will be sweating for the next week. Despite finishing 10-2, the Hurricanes did not secure a spot in the ACC title game due to tiebreakers. Virginia will face Duke in next weekend's title game, meaning Miami will need to secure an at-large berth to avoid missing the CFP.

No. 1 Ohio State defeated No. 15 Michigan 27-9, setting up a date with No. 2 Indiana in the Big Ten title game. The winner of that marquee showdown will receive a first-round bye, while the loser could also have a case, too.

CBS Sports was here here every step of the way to update you with the latest scores, highlights and storylines throughout the evening.

California stuns SMU, pushes Duke to ACC Championship

FINAL: Cal 38, No. 21 SMU 35

Needing a win on the road to reach the ACC Championship Game, SMU erased a 17-point deficit in the fourth quarter before giving up a go-ahead touchdown with 42 seconds left during a heartbreaking loss. SMU (8-4) moved the ball into Cal territory on its ensuing possession, but Sam Keltner missed a 52-yarder wide right in the final seconds. Mustangs quarterback Kevin Jennings finished with three total touchdowns as his team now awaits their bowl fate.

The chaotic result means Duke (7-5) is heading to Charlotte next week to battle 19th-ranked Virginia — who took out Virginia Tech — to clinch a spot in the finale. If the Blue Devils beat the Cavaliers, there's a chance the ACC will not have a representative in the College Football Playoff if there are two Group of Five conference champions ranked higher than Duke in the selection committee's final poll.

Virginia punches ticket to ACC Championship

FINAL: No. 18 Virginia 27, Virginia Tech 7

Virginia is heading to the conference championship game for the second time since 2019 following Saturday night's thumping of arch rival Virginia Tech. One of only two ACC teams in control of their own destiny coming into the season's final weekend, Tony Elliott's Cavaliers held the Hokies to just 197 total yards and six first downs to win their 10th game.

The win snapped a four-game skid in the rivalry series for Virginia, which will play SMU or Duke in Charlotte next week. If the Cavaliers win, they'll be heading to the College Football Playoff for the first time. Elliott went 11-23 at Virginia over his first three seasons before this year's transfer portal-laden roster won big in the ACC and now has a chance to make history.

No. 18 Virginia in control against Virginia Tech

Halftime: No. 18 Virginia 14, Virginia 0

The Cavaliers are up by 14 points over their in-state rival, but that score isn't really indicative of how this one has gone. The Hokies have presented no threat to the Cavaliers to this point, and Virginia has been in control since intercepting Kyron Drones on the first drive of the game.

Since that opening drive, Virginia's defense has throttled Virginia Tech. The Hokies drive chart is rather ugly. They missed a field goal before turning in four straight three-and-outs to end the half. Drones has thrown for 21 yards, and Virginia Tech is averaging 4.0 yards per carry on the ground.

On the offensive side of the ball, Cavaliers running back J'Mari Taylor has rushed for a touchdown and thrown for a touchdown. Kameron Courtney is up to four receptions for 36 yards.

With a win in this game, the Cavaliers will get into the ACC Championship Game. There are still 30 minutes left to play, but Virginia looks like it's headed down the road to Charlotte.

Florida State misses out on bowl game berth with loss to Florida

FINAL: Florida 40, Florida State 21

Florida defeated Florida State 40-21 on Saturday in the final game of the 2025 season for both teams. With a win against the Gators, the Seminoles would've reached the six-win mark and become bowl eligible. However, FSU's in-state rival spoiled that opportunity. Both programs will miss out on a bowl game.

Florida heads into this offseason with many questions looming, including who will be the coach in 2026. As for Florida State, the school announced earlier this month that Mike Norvell will return next season despite finishing 5-7 this year.

With the loss, Florida State was swept by Miami and Florida in back-to-back seasons for the fifth time in program history.

ACC Championship scenarios in focus

Virginia, SMU, Miami and Duke are the four teams with a chance to reach next week's ACC Championship Game in Charlotte entering Saturday's prime-time matchups. If the Cavaliers beat Virginia Tech and the Mustangs handle California on the road, Virginia and SMU will meet in the league title showdown. If either of those teams lose Saturday night, here are the scenarios:

  • After beating Pittsburgh, Miami will play in the ACC Championship Game if SMU + Virginia lose and NC State beats North Carolina.
  • Miami would also play in the ACC Championship Game if Virginia loses + SMU beats Cal and NC State beats North Carolina.
  • Duke will play in the ACC Championship Game if SMU loses OR North Carolina beats NC State and Virginia loses OR Virginia loses + NC State beats North Carolina

Oklahoma unofficially cements its College Football Playoff spot

FINAL: No. 8 Oklahoma 17, LSU 13

As has been the case for Oklahoma most of the season, it wasn't always pretty, but a win is a win. The Sooners pulled out a victory over the Tigers in a defensive slugfest, and they needed a fourth-quarter comeback in order to do so.

Late in the fourth quarter, the Oklahoma offense needed a play, and it finally got one. John Mateer connected with Isaiah Sategna III for a 58-yard touchdown strike to give the Sooners the lead. After that, the Oklahoma defense continued its dominance of the LSU offense and locked down the win.

Mateer was far from perfect on the night. He threw a trio of interceptions and couldn't get much going on the ground, but he did throw for 318 yards and two touchdowns as well. That's been the story of the Sooners this year. They play with fire but walk away unscathed, due in large part to the defense.

Brent Venable' defense was the driving force behind another big SEC win as Oklahoma held LSU to 198 yards and forced a turnover. If the Sooners are going to do any damage in the College Football Playoff, that side of the ball will have to get it done.

Now, the only question remaining for Oklahoma is where it will be slotted in the final playoff bracket. The Sooners are certainly in play for a home game in the first round.

Vanderbilt runs it up on Tennessee as Diego Pavia makes his Heisman case

Diego Pavia's final regular season game for Vanderbilt was one to remember, as he tore up the Tennessee defense to the tune of more than 400 combined passing and rushing yards in a 45-24 win in Knoxville.

The Dores will need a lot of help they don't seem likely to get to reach the College Football Playoff after entering the week at No. 14, but Pavia's performance on the road should earn him a trip to New York City for the Heisman Trophy presentation in a few weeks.

It was a back-and-forth affair and Pavia had a pair of interceptions that helped the Vols take some early leads, but once he settled in, the Vols had no answers for No. 2.

In the second half, Vandy outscored the Vols 24-3, leaving no doubt about who was the better team on Saturday. The 'Dores out-gained the Vols 573 to 382 in what ended up a dominant showing on the road. Vandy's 45 points were the most they've scored against Tennessee since 1923.

For Pavia, it's the likely end of one of the greatest careers of any player at Vanderbilt, as he'll be remembered for a long time in Nashville as one of the catalysts for a rebirth of Vandy football. Pavia going out with the Commodores' first win in Knoxville since 2018 was a fitting -- and surely satisfying -- exclamation point.

Whether Pavia's late season surge is enough to actually win him the Heisman will be dependent on what happens in the Big Ten title game, when the co-favorites -- Julian Sayin and Fernando Mendoza -- go head-to-head. If that's a defensive slog with both QBs struggling, perhaps Pavia's stock can rise, but fi one of those shines in Indy, it might be hard for Pavia to win.

Either way, he is certainly deserving of being a finalist and having his performance this year honored, as he's led Vandy to its first 10-win season in program history.

LSU takes a 10-3 lead on Oklahoma after Mateer's second INT

No. 8 Oklahoma is now in serious danger of losing its spot in the College Football Playoff as LSU took a 10-3 lead in the third quarter after John Mateer threw his second interception of the game.

A.J. Haulcy jumped the seam and took it back into Oklahoma territory, where the Tigers finally put together a strong offensive drive with a big run from Michael Van Buren setting up a short TD pass to Zavion Thomas for the first touchdown of the evening in Norman.

The Sooners will now have to find a way into the end zone themselves -- or kick three field goals -- in the next 26 minutes of game action if they're going to get themselves to the Playoff.

Defense optional in Knoxville

Halftime: No. 14 Vanderbilt 21, No. 19 Tennessee 21

As the oddsmakers in Vegas predicted, the offenses are humming right along on Rocky Top. Diego Pavia and Joey Aguilar are exchanging haymakers as neither side is having much trouble moving the football.

The Commodores have yet to hit the Volunteers over the top like they did to Kentucky last week, but they are still picking up one chunk play after another. Vandy is averaging 9.4 yards per play through the air and 8.1 yards per attempt on the ground. Tennessee, on the other hand, has connected on some of its signature big plays. The defense has intercepted Pavia twice, and Aguilar found wide receiver Chris Brazzell II for a 52-yard score in the second quarter.

Right before the first half ended, Pavia led Vanderbilt on a game-tying drive that resulted in a seven-yard touchdown pass to Tre Richardson. That touchdown toss was Pavia's 25th of the season, which set a new program single-season record.

The second half is shaping up to be a classic in what is likely the biggest game between these two rivals in their history. The Commodores are looking for the first 10-win season in school history and a shot at the College Football Playoff.

Oklahoma locked in another defensive struggle with LSU

Halftime: No. 8 Oklahoma 3, LSU 3

As has been the case in most every Oklahoma game this season, the Sooners find themselves where they're most comfortable: in a defensive battle.

Oklahoma and LSU are deadlocked at 3-3 at the half, as neither offense has been able to do much of anything through 30 minutes of play. The tone was set early when Harold Perkins Jr. picked off John Mateer and returned it inside the Oklahoma 5, only for Peyton Bowen to pick off Michael Van Buren in the end zone on the Tigers' very first play.

From there, the best either offense could do was generate one field goal drive apiece. LSU's leading passer is receiver Zavion Thomas with 17 yards, as Van Buren has a grand total of 7 yards on 4 of 10 passing with the interception.

On the other side, Mateer has had a bit more success with 99 yards passing and the INT. But while the Sooners have moved the ball out to midfield a few times, they've only been able to finish drives in scoring position once. A win for Oklahoma would effectively lock the Sooners into the playoff, but they seem determined to make it as difficult and stressful as possible.

Colorado caps off disappointing 2025 season

FINAL: Kansas State 24, Colorado 14

Colorado went out with a whimper in its final game of the 2025 season, which was fitting based on how the rest of the campaign went. In his first season without superstars Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders, Deion Sanders struggled to find an identity for his squad on either side of the ball as the Buffaloes finished 3-9.

In the season finale, quarterback Kaidon Salter struggled with 172 yards and an interception. In the running game, the Buffs averaged just 3.2 yards per carry. On the other side of the ball, Kansas State rumbled for 206 yards, but the story of the game might have been fourth downs. Colorado went 1-for-5 fourth-down conversion attempts while Kansas State went 2-for-3 in those situations.

It was a difficult season in Boulder as the team dealt with a carousel at the quarterback position. None of Salter, Julian Lewis or Ryan Staub were really able to seize the starting role despite all three getting opportunities at times. Sanders went back to Salter, the Week 1 starter, rather than burn Lewis' redshirt in Manhattan on Saturday. After averaging 32.9 points per game last season, Colorado averaged just 20.9 points this fall.

The question now is whether Sanders and his coaching staff can bounce back next year. Sanders has proven he can get high-end talent on campus, but he needs to find more of it and put it all together on the field in 2026.

Sanders is now 16-21 in three seasons at Colorado with a 9-18 mark in conference play -- 1-8 in the Pac-12 in 2023 and 8-10 combined in the Big 12.

Miami makes final statement to CFP committee with dominant win at Pitt

FINAL: No. 12 Miami 38, No. 22 Pittsburgh 7

Miami did its best to answer any lingering questions the College Football Playoff committee might have on Saturday with a 38-7 demolition of Pitt on the road.

The Hurricanes have not been great away from home this season and only left the state of Florida twice all year, with one of those being a loss at SMU. Saturday's game at Pitt was also a cold weather (36 degrees at kick), outdoor game that has not always been where the Hurricanes have thrived. Pitt, ranked No. 22, was fresh off a dominant showing at Georgia Tech, making this one last chance for Miami to pick up a win over a ranked opponent.

The Canes did just that in dominant fashion and left no doubt about their ability to take their A-game on the road and win on both sides of the ball. The offense, which has been rolling of late, continued its strong play as Carson Beck went 23 of 29 passing for 267 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. Malachi Toney caught one of those and threw another, as the freshman was once again the best player on the field. The Canes added 141 yards rushing and showed the kind of "game control" that the committee reveres so much.

On defense, they set the tone early by forcing Pitt into a fourth and 23 on their opening drive and applied constant pressure to freshman QB Mason Heintschel, holding him under 200 yards passing. The Pitt rushing attack had a grand total of 30 yards (including those sack numbers) as Miami's defensive front dominated the Panthers' offensive line.

It was a necessary performance from the Hurricanes after Texas' win over Texas A&M on Friday night opened the door for further debate about the Playoff at-large bubble. They will now wait to see if a miracle arrives in the form of losses by SMU and Virginia to get them into the ACC title game, where they could eliminate the bubble questions entirely, but even if they don't get there, the Canes have done everything the committee could have asked them to do over the last month with the schedule they had.

They won't feel comfortable that they're in the field until conference championship week is over and we see how the auto bids sort out, but they avoided the potential for getting knocked out of the conversation on Saturday at Pitt with another impressive performance.

Bowl-bound Kansas State rolls as Kentucky, Baylor miss opportunity

Kansas State's 24-14 win over Colorado will send the Wildcats to bowl season with their sixth victory, extending the program's postseason streak to five under coach Chris Klieman. CBS Sports' current bowl projection for Kansas State is a matchup with Navy in the Armed Forces Bowl.

Needing a win over Louisville to get to bowl eligibility, Kentucky failed to deliver, falling 41-0 on the road during the worst rivalry weekend loss of the Mark Stoops era. The Wildcats lost consecutive games to end 5-7 overall after winning three straight at one point to give themselves a shot down the stretch.

In the Big 12, Houston's 31-24 win at Baylor ends Dave Aranda and the Bears' season at 5-7. Baylor was 5-4 at one point before three straight losses to end the campaign resulted in a 3-6 tailspin during conference play.

BYU rallies from 14-0 deficit, takes halftime lead over UCF

Halftime: No. 11 BYU 17, UCF 14

The Cougars spotted UCF a quick 14-0 lead on Saturday, but came alive and scored 17 points in the second quarter to claim their first lead of the day going into the half at 17-14.

It was a sloppy start for BYU, which came into the game already locked into the Big 12 title game against Texas Tech. The 11th-ranked Cougars were already going to need a win in the Big 12 Championship to lock in a playoff spot, but a loss on Saturday to UCF would ended any slim hopes of an at-large berth. That seems increasingly unlikely with Texas winning last night and Miami rolling today, but losing to this UCF team would not be the way the Cougars want to go into the Big 12 title game.

The defense got hit with a few chunk plays in the passing game by UCF early, including the two TDs, but settled in for the second quarter and have completely stymied the Knights on the ground (just 28 rushing yards in the half). They also got some help from a disastrous UCF trick play that resulted in an INT deep in UCF territory.

On offense, Bear Bachmeier and LJ Martin came alive in the second quarter, with Bachmeier finishing the half 11-for-13 for 152 yards and Martin rushing for both TDs and 55 yards on 14 carries. The Cougars will look to open up a cushion in the third quarter to avoid any real Week 14 stress and prevent the Knights from a shocking win to get bowl eligible.

Texas Tech on cruise control against West Virginia

Halftime: No. 5 Texas Tech 28, West Virginia 0

At least one of the Big 12 favorites is going to have a stress-free Saturday as No. 5 Texas Tech is taking care of business on the road in Morgantown. The Red Raiders take a 28-0 lead into the half (that probably could've been more), avoiding any kind of trap game potential against West Virginia.

Behren Morton has carved up the Mountaineers with 250 yards and three touchdowns through the air, and the other touchdown came courtesy of a handoff to linebacker Jacob Rodriguez as Texas Tech continues to try and get his name further into the awards conversation. The defense has dominated per usual and given up just 114 yards of to West Virginia, with all of it coming through the air as WVU has zero rushing yards through 30 minutes of action.

A win today will come close to locking up a Playoff spot for the Red Raiders, as the committee showed last year they don't want to punish teams too severely for losses in conference title games. What's more interesting is their Big 12 title game opponent, BYU, is currently trailing UCF 14-0 after the first quarter, which would have a significant impact on the Playoff rankings going into conference championship weekend if that stunning score line holds.

Miami's Malachi Toney shredding Pittsburgh

Halftime: No. 12 Miami 17, No. 22 Pittsburgh 7

Malachi Toney is doing it all for the Hurricanes in Pittsburgh. The electric wide receiver has been involved in both ends of the passing game and the running game as Miami takes a 10-point lead into the locker room.

Toney has 94 total yards to this point, and Pat Narduzzi's defense simply hasn't had any answer for him. On its first touchdown of the game, Miami reached into its bag of tricks as Toney threw a nine-yard touchdown pass to Elija Lofton. Later in the half, Toney was on the receiving end of a 22-yard touchdown strike from Carson Beck.

While Toney has been showing out on offense, the Miami defense has made life miserable for Pitt quarterback Mason Heintschel. Through two quarters, the Canes have gotten to Heintschel for four sacks, and he got banged up late in the half and exited the game. Miami's defensive dominance hasn't been limited to rushing the passer either. The Hurricanes have five tackles for loss and have allowed just 11 rushing yards.

This is a key game in the ACC Championship race as both teams are holding onto the hope of a conference title appearance. The winner will need some help, but it will be one step closer to Charlotte.

The Six Pack: Picks for Texas vs. Texas A&M, Ohio State vs. Michigan and Tom Fornelli's lock of the week

The thing about the truth is that no matter how far you try to run from it, eventually you have to face it. And the truth is this: the 2025 season has been an unmitigated disaster for The Six Pack. After a 1-5 showing last week, this column sits at 34-44 on the season and down 14.66 units.

It's easily the worst year in the history of the column, and I've been writing it on CBSSports.com for 16 seasons. I've had losing years before, but the worst of them finished down roughly four units (that was before I started applying actual juice from sportsbooks, so it's an estimate). Even that is 10 units better than where things stand now. So even if I go 6-0 this week, this will still go down as our worst season.

So why keep going? A couple of reasons. One is that my editors are exacting revenge for having to deal with me all these years and are reveling in my weekly embarrassment. I don't blame them. The other is that you can still make money off this column by fading every pick I make.

Predicting college football overreactions: Texas A&M should be No. 1, Clark Lea climbs SEC coaching ladder

One of the best weekends of the year is finally here. Though college football'sRivalry Week signals the end of the regular season -- well, most of it, at least -- it also promises a chaotic slate filled with impactful results and games that shift the national landscape.

Every conference race is still wide open. None of the Power Four title game fields have been set yet, meaning that multiple teams will be battling it out for one of eight spots as the weekend unfolds.

Beyond that, several College Football Playoff spots are still unsettled. Obviously, teams like No. 1 Ohio State, No. 2 Indiana and No. 3 Texas A&M can feel pretty good about their postseason outlook regardless of what happens in Week 14, but those on the bubble have a lot on the line.

Wild coaching carousel enters final weekend: Where do Florida, Ole Miss stand? What's up with Auburn?

The Sunday after the college football regular season concludes typically comes with a flurry of activity, which kicks the coaching carousel into overdrive. But this year's "Black Sunday" might end up being much quieter than usual due to the volume of jobs (14) that came open before season's end.

Four schools -- MarylandWisconsinBaylor and Florida State -- so far have opted to sit this coaching carousel out with similar versions of a statement that expressed the following sentiments:

  • The buyout money owed to their coach is too steep.
  • They'd rather not get into a cycle that includes Florida, LSU, Auburn and Penn State.
  • They plan to pump more money into their roster compensation infrastructure and hope for improvement next year.

Latest injury updates for No. 6 Oregon vs. Washington

No. 6 Oregon is expected to again be without receivers Dakorien Moore (knee) and Gary Bryant Jr. (ankle), according to CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz. Moore, a five-star freshman, hasn't played since the Ducks faced Wisconsin on Oct. 25 and has totaled 28 catches for 443 yards and four touchdowns. Bryant was injured early at Iowa on Nov. 8 after posting 25 receptions for 299 yards and four scores. Their absence should again elevate tight end Kenyon Sadiq as the Ducks' top pass-catching option.

The outlook is more optimistic for Washington with receiver Denzel Boston (ankle) and running back Jonah Coleman (knee) expected to start despite dealing with lingering injuries that limited them recently, according to ESPN. Cornerback Tacario Davis remains questionable with his status still uncertain heading into kickoff at 3:30 p.m. ET on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.

Ohio State's star WR duo set to return vs. Michigan

No. 1 Ohio State received an encouraging update ahead of Saturday's matchup with Michigan as star wideouts Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate are expected to play, per ESPN. Smith sat out last week's game against Rutgers, while Tate last played against Penn State on Nov. 1. Both have dealt with lower-body injuries and were reportedly limited throughout the week in practice.

The duo has combined for 1,613 yards receiving and 17 touchdown catches on the season. The Buckeyes are trying to snap a four-game losing streak to the rival Wolverines.

Michigan can rewrite century of history with another win over Ohio State -- and probably make CFP field

Ninety-nine years ago — back when Woody Hayes was just a teenager and Bo Schembechler was but a glint in his father's eye — Michigan pulled off something it hasn't managed since: five straight wins over Ohio State.

Nearly a century later, the No. 15 Wolverines (9-2) are staring at the same possibility. Beat the No. 1 Buckeyes (11-0) on Saturday and Michigan ties a streak that predates Route 66 and the Great Depression, a run almost no one saw coming when this rivalry flipped four years ago.

"This four-year run, especially with that strange, strange result last year, is remarkable," said Greg Dooley, a university lecturer and Michigan football historian.

Last season's shocker in Columbus added more powder to the keg. A 13-10 Michigan win as a 19.5-point underdog sparked turmoil after Michigan planted its flag at midfield. Tempers flared, chaos ensued and police cleared the scene with pepper spray.
