Cates was assigned to AHL Lehigh Valley on Tuesday.
In a corresponding move, the Flyers activated Scott Laughton (upper body) from injured reserve. Cates has appeared in five games with Philadelphia this season. He has four goals and seven points in 11 minor-league contests during the 2022-23 campaign.
