The Phoenix Open is the highest attended tournament each year on the PGA Tour, and on Saturday it set a new single-day attendance record when 201,003 fans filed through the gates into TPC Scottsdale.

The tournament attendance on Saturday was almost equal to the population of Scottsdale, Arizona (230,512).

The previous record for the tournament was 189,722 on Saturday in 2014. This year's tournament is on pace to shatter the record for the highest attendance for a week, set last year with 564,368, as there have already been over 552,000 show up through Saturday.

The NBC broadcast noted that the 201,003 made it the second-highest attended single day American sporting event, behind the Indianapolis 500 which has an estimated capacity of 257,000.
