Diamondbacks right-hander Brandon McCarthy is presently on the disabled list with shoulder inflammation, but of greater concern are the ongoing after-effects of his 2012 head injury. Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports that last week McCarthy suffered a seizure while dining out with his wife. The seizure is attributed to the life-threatening skull fracture he suffered last September, when a line drive struck him on the head.
Piecoro writes:
McCarthy was at a restaurant in north Phoenix with his wife, Amanda, on Monday night when the incident occurred.
After he slumped over in a booth, Amanda climbed across, pushed the table away and called for help.
He was taken to the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, where a CT scan determined he had not suffered additional head trauma. He said he was put on anti-seizure medication.
Doctors told him he would have no physical limitations and that he could resume his rehabilitation the next day.
“I remember someone restraining me and telling me I had a seizure,” McCarthy said. “I don’t really remember much past that until I was at the hospital.”
As Piercoro notes, McCarthy was aware that seizures were possible in the wake of his injury, but last week marked the first time he'd suffered one. Initially, McCarthy was told another surgery was possible, but doctors eventually told him it wouldn't be necessary.
That's frightening stuff, to say the least. Our best wishes to McCarthy as he continues to cope with the injury. Consider this a reminder of how serious head injuries can be.
As for Amanda McCarthy, her wonderfully dry sense of humor remains intact ...
Don't worry guys his shoulder is getting better, your fantasy teams will be safe in a few weeks..
